Easiest way to get rid of the crud ring during a range session is to give a quick brush with a brass brush between shots. I use 777 in my one in-line and several side-hammer percussion guns with great results. Generally I have 2 rods with me at the range, one wearing a brush, and the other a jag/seater. Brush the barrel, dump out the particulate matter, swab with a dry patch, swab with a lightly lubed patch, reload, fire and repeat. I can easily go 50 shots this way without a problem, and with no degradation of accuracy.
Tests at the range show that I can go about 7-8 shots with my side-hammer guns (shooting 70-95 grains 777 ffg, depending on the gun) without the crud ring becoming an impediment to loading or accuracy. Shooting patched round ball seems to pose fewer difficulties than shooting minies or maxies. With the in-line shooting 90 grains I get about 3 shots before it starts to get harder to load, particularly more difficult to achieve uniform bullet seating pressure.
(Oh, yes, should mention I only shoot loose 777, no pellets, but my brother reports getting 3-4 shots from his in-line using 2x50grain 777 pellets before he can really feel the crud ring binding the bullet as he seats it.)
