The all-around hunting calibre?

For use in North America, the best overall cartridge is the .30-06 which will take down any large game on the continent with a well placed shot. Factory ammunition is available vitually anywhere if your silly enough not to reload. The .30-06 really shows its versatility if you reload, it has over 60 plus different projectiles available for reloading. This way your rifle can be used for anything from Varmints to Large game efficiently. Most people that buy a larger caliber are just trying to get down range power to make up for piss poor marksmanship and lack of pre season practice.

If you reload you already know that .308 diameter bullets used in the .30-06 are interchangeable in the following calibers;

1) .300 Win Mag
2) .30-30
3) .300 Savage
4) .308 Win
5) .30-40 Krag
6) .300 H&H Magnum
7) .308 Norma Magnum
8) .300 Weatherby Magnum
9) 7.62mmX 54R (slug barrel first to verify)

There are probably a few others but that gets the point across that RELOADERS RULE !!!!

For North America and a lot of African species, a properly loaded 30-06 is about all any man or woman needs. 150's or 165's for the lighter to medium stuff and 180's or 200's for the big stuff.

Oh boy. This thread is hot. You can take any game in North America with a
.22 long rifle loaded with 40 grain solid. That would be illegal for sure and most likely unethical as well.

The more I play around with the 375 Ruger, he more I see how effective it would be for one gun, anything , anywhere in the world. You would just need to have A few loads.

A full power 300gr Premium load @ 2500 fps for anything dangerous.
A full power 260gr Premium load @ 2750fps with a flat 30-06 liek trajectory for all other big game.
A full power 235gr load @ 2950fps to flatten trajectory for yotes and probably a great deer load.
A reduced load 200gr @ 1600fps for small game like grouse and plinking etc.

Mostly, you could hunt wih the 260gr load, keeping a few reduced loads in your pocket for grouse.

When predator seasons start, you could switch to the 235gr load.

I sure wouldn't suggest this for a beginner, there is an argument that this would be more versatile than the favorite "all around" cartridge, the 30-06.

:p

Man, you are hilarious. .375 for everything. I agree maybe. Forget the .22LR, go straight for .50BMG. May as well go really big. There was a thread here somewhere about 20mm sniper rifles. They would take a moose I bet

.30-06 of course. It is in my only true hunting rifle. Although I have an
8mm Mauser, 7.62 x 54R, and a .30-30 that I sometimes bring along for backup... just in case my rifle in .30-06 drops off a cliff or goes for a swim in a deep verrrry cold freezing lake, or some other weird unforseen mishap occured. Hasn't happened yet!

.30-06, boring........maybe. Reality..........can't be beat for all around versatility. After 1906 the Ammunition manufacturers created and marketed new wannabe cartridges to stimulate profit(BS baffles brains). 1906 technology that still stands the test of time and is a proven, outstanding, reliable performer.
