Sigh.
Isnt it supposed to almost guarantee a pick in at least one of my backup options?
2nd year in a row...nothing.got my license in 2021 or 2022... isnt there a bonus pick for new guys as well?

This is in BC.

I even made picks where odds arent too bad.

Just had to vent.
Anyone else got anything good?

I won my last draw in 1981!
White tail antlerless.
Just another government tax grab, but I keep trying.
Would be nice to get a bull moose draw at least once.

I’ve been putting in since 2016 in relatively good odd areas and have yet to win any lottery tags! Had a buddy put into the same area and he won it like 4 years ago and he got it again last year. (Same area I applied for.)

The BC system is a mess and not well done like other places.

No bonus picks for new hunters or anything like that it’s legit a crap shoot. Saw a photo of someone getting 4 draws this year which I still think was photoshopped 😂.

Applied for 8 years till I got a moose draw. That was 2 years ago and nothing since. I apply for at least 4 different draws every year.

Guaranteed? Hahahaha nope. And no, no bonus for new guys.
The second choice thing is simply that if all the authorizations are handed out before it gets to your entry, you get a chance at your second choice application.

The odds are the most misunderstood aspect of BC’s system. Example, if you are applying on something that is 5.2:1 odds, and there are 100 authorizations allotted, it means that LAST YEAR, 520 people applied for those 100 permits. When you see the ones listed as 0.9:1 and think to yourself “that one is guaranteed this year!” It just means that if there were say 100 authorizations, and maybe 20 guys or 50 guys or 90 guys applied last year. But this year, 30 000 other hunters saw the exact same thing…

It is truly the cleanest and fairest system going, in that every single applicant has the exact same chance as every one else who applies, just like the 6/49. (Reduced odds draws notwithstanding), and it is a clean slate each year that is a fresh run draw each spring.

One thing many hunters I know who have never pulled a LEH tag in years..... like one guy I know who got his hunting license the year I did.
He #####es and moans about the LEH but one thing he never does is respond to the harvest questionaires. He would throw them in the trash and carry on. I believe that by not doing the hunting questionaires , those people are being disqualified from the draws. I don't know this for sure but I have seen where others have discussed this online as well.
My wife has been a hunter for 8 (?) years now..... she has been drawn for moose twice.

and those odds...... as previously mentioned by others, the draw odds are based on the previous year.
However, tag numbers change year to year so really the odds don't mean much.
The area I hunt used to have open seasons with LEH in the middle during the best weeks of the rut.
In recent years the area went totally LEH and tag numbers very low. So odds are stupid bad LOL
I noticed this year, despite the odds being terrible, my area saw an increase in tag numbers. Not a big increase but more than previous years.
I put in for that draw regardless because I know the area well and I know where the bulls like to hang out after the rut or catching the cows in a late rut. |Speaking about 2nd choice odds...... my LEH bull moose authorization was my second choice pick which is the late hunt and my first choice was a different region a little bit north and the middle hunt during peak rut time. This is the second time since LEH hunting was introduced in BC , that I have pulled an LEH tag on the second choice hunt.
I have a love/hate for the LEH system and I hestitate to bother with it every year but in the end I put in for hunts in areas I know well and if I get a draw it;s a bonus hunt for the season and a good excuse to visit friends that live in those areas.

i delete the emails about my fishing harvest. bastards sold me the salmon stamp, then closed the rivers for fishing for the entire season... and the balls to keep emailing asking me to fill out the questionnaire. all the while i could have driven 10 minutes about bought all the sockeye for 20 bux a pop from ... you can guess where.... lets leave it there.

I've never understood that love/hate thing when it comes to the leh. It's $6 per entry, once a year. Not many people even put in for the full suite of draws available as near as I can tell from the complaining online. So maybe a person spends $6 on the chance that maybe they get to hunt a moose in their backyard that they otherwise wouldn't have.

Could be worse. We could be using a points system in BC, where everyone else who's been hunting for years and years would have way more points than you. Point creep is a real pain!

OP I feel your pain, but it could be worse, especially for newer hunters. There are a few states I have considered starting accumulating points in so that one day 10 or 20 years down the line I can go hunt, but its a lot of money to buy non-resident licenses JUST to accumulate points so I haven't yet, and by the time my finances allow me to I'll be so far behind the curve - guys getting the good units in some states have 20+ points, and there are far more people getting points each year than there are people coming off the top of the list by getting drawn so by the time I'm able to actually afford such a trip it'll be more like 40 points you need for a good unit.

I typically put the harvest questionnaire up with intent to get to it later and then forget about it. Yet I've gotten 2 moose draws in the last 10 years.

I answer those every single year... I wish it was that easy haha.

That said the last few years I have only done 1 or 2 draws due to having a back injury and surgery so I'm not putting in for a full suite of tickets.

I'm not say for a fact that not doing "hunting:" questionaires means no LEH draws, I have just seen the comments alluding to that many times over the years. Including here on CGN. My issues with the LEH is not about how many times I get drawn or not. It's more of an issue with how it gets used as a management tool in areas where management is being manipulated by special interests. I think Vancouver Island and sunshine coast elk hunters might agree. Same with other regions of the province with lots of animals but LEH only for "other" reasons.
Anyhow, I am done on that topic. Not going to have my posts picked apart by monkey's like Suther. LOL
