Did anyone notice a nice old Savage 99 in 250-3000 at the Assiniboia gun show a couple of weeks ago? It was just in the door and had a scope on it. The stock looked like it was perhaps oiled. I asked what the price was and the fellow told me $1200!!!!!!!!!!! Any ideas what would have made this rifle so high in price? I was speechless and couldn't summon up the wits to ask what was so special about it. The fellow seemed a bit arrogant, but maybe he was just tired of tirekickers. I have been sort of looking for a 1899 in 250-3000, and thought, "Ah ha!" I've found one!". Mind that it was a nice rifle.:p:p

They are a unique design with a lot of history. They have a strong group of collector admirers. Nearly all the 99's in circulation have been worn, rusted or modified to some extent. Savage doesn't make them any more, so if it was original and in excellent shape, it's simply supply/demand.

Don't feel bad, the guy just wanted to refill his crack pipe.

First off, unless it was a model R it was D&T'd aftermarket which kills any collectibilty right there and it doesn't matter how much condition it had it was turned into a $300-$500 shooter as soon as someone put the drill to it.

The guys been watching the U.S. auctions to much and figures he'll get the same in Canada, he'll be trying to flog that gun for the next couple years till he gets wise.

Yep, ya'll gotta watch out for that, tis why i m looking at getting an Import FFL. :D Whatever I buy out of Canada, ic an sell to a guy named Steve, double maybe triple what i actually paid for it. :D

Screw you Lester, you leave our guns here, there's already enough Canadians selling off our guns down there to make the quick buck. Have about as much respect for them as I do for that little pile the dog leaves in the backyard.;)

Move here and then you can buy our guns.:dancingbanana:

I seen that one too. I have one in .308 so i decided to have a peek at it. Good thing I didn't drop it! I seen a .22 norinco lever there that I was interested in until I seen the price, $299!! they are only $199 new from marstar and this one was well used.

That is one thing that gunshows seem to have in common...a lot of overpriced merchandise. You really do have to know your stuff or go with someone that does. The upcoming show in Calgary is much the same way. There are the odd good deals though.

I'd love to go to a big show like that just so I could dig through all the little boxes of nick nacks. Hell, I'd just like to get into my gunsmiths boxes to see what he's got hiding in there. Alot of people don't even know what the heck they have. I found a part I needed for a sight worth over $100 the other day just sitting in a pile of nothing for $10, perfect.

Seems to me I saw a couple of 250-3000s at the Kamloops show last April. I think they were in the 400 plus range but one was a beater. High price there was about $500. Picked up a nice 99c 308 for less than $400. Hardly shot from what I can see. Mine now. Although if I saw another nice one in 250 or even 38-55 I might just pick it up. I seem to be leaning towards another 99. I remember Maddog saying something about these being habit forming. Cant imagine why....

They are habit forming, I have a .308 in 99c and a factory 22-250 in 99c as well. I've only seen one other in that calibre.

I own a nice little Ruger M77 International in 250-3000. Nice little rifle I bought from a hunting buddy. The only thing wrong with the 250 Sav. is the price of cartridges; being not all that common , they tend to be expensive. So I am now learning to reload.

At Calgary last spring a buddy and myself each had a 99EG 250 for sale.Excellent condition with origional optional rear sight.1949 and 1950 We put $750 on them for wiggle room. The tables where 5 rows apart. Both sold within an hour of opening on Fri. for $700.
There are only three rules for buying and setting prices on 99s and 1899s
CONDITION CONDITION CONDITION

I've got one of them and a couple more of the harder to find post mil calibers like the 284, 375 Win and 358 although my 358 is a pre-mil. I know a couple more guys on the site besides Trix that also have one.

Like Rich just said, if it ain't got condition it ain't gonna sell at the prices alot of people think they will.

250 @ Assiniboia

It was an EG , I think '53. Decent not special. The 'Stith' mounts were not the type that the fron mounts in the rear sight dovetail, so it had been (non factory) D & T

Scope was worth about $75 .

Also had non factory sling swivels.

So a nice shooter , I think (action locked and @1200 wasn't going to ask him to unlock)

Definetly on crack

He was the guy that had a Burris FFII for $ 329 - 'buts its brand new he said' - yeah and yu can buy them new for 229 to 249
