I'm looking to put together a real top notch tactical pump gun and I'd like to put a folding stock on it, but I really don't know anything about them. The "top quality" shotgun I'm looking at right now is a Remington 870p MAX. Is that a good choice?

I'm not too concerned about cost of the folding stock, I just want something really good. What are your thoughts on the best folding shotgun stocks you can get in Canada? Where can I purchase them?

of the ones I've had I liked the Choate side folder the best. I had an older Butler Creek that was almost the same stock and it was pretty good too. the worst one to shoot was the Remington top folder, there was no way you could shoot it with out it biting your face.

In my opinion none of them are that comfortable. However the Knoxx Spec ops folder at least reduces recoil so it is more comfortable to shoot than most.

I found the Knoxx Spec Ops folder to be heavy and not that compact when folded.
It also was dificult to get a good sight down the barrel with a bead sight without resting your cheek on the uncofortable wire folder.
It would probably be better with a red dot so you could aim with your head up but really what's the point in having such a heavy not so compact folder?
Might as well go with a shorter barrel if you want better portability.

The Spec ops folder weighs 4oz more than a Butler creek folder, and is 2" longer. The trade off is recoil reduction. Also it is the only folder that you can use on a 14" pump.

Well, everyone else seems to have the folding stock issue covered, so let me answer your question about the P-MAX. It is a fantastic package. It is a bit pricey, but you really do get your money's worth if you add up the value of all of the individual components: Surefire forend, SGT ghost ring rear sight, XS front sight, mag extension and Speedfeed pistol grip stock. Not to mention that it is all built on the 870 Police Magnum receiver. So yeah, it is a very good choice.

But if it were me, I would rethink the folding stock. They really do suck for the most part... Unless you absolutely need to be able to store the gun in a small space.

By the way, where did you find the 870P-MAX? They are hard to come by in Canada.

I have a Choate top folder on my 18.5" Mossberg 500A. It hurts to shoot slugs in it.

I have 14" HP9-1. Even with the Norinco stock it is a pussycat to shoot slugs with. I put a Spec OPS stock on it and now anyone, even a newby can shoot it with slugs.

I didn't like how wide it made the gun feel and the fact that it wouldn't fit into a rifle case because of how high the butt loop sticks up when folded.

As far as the 14" barrel goes it makes the required length easily and is very close to working with a 12.5" barrel....

Every folder I've tried sucked. Some suck more than others. The Remington factory folder looks cool but will beat the crap out of you, I don't regret selling mine. The Choate side folder is the best folder I've had my mitts on, but I still wouldn't want one on my gun. Now I stick with conventional stocks of wood or plastic, no more folders or pistol grips for me. I can make fast hits, comfortably, and to me that's what it's all about.
