So I keep running myself in a circle trying to figure out a 9.3x62 build.

As seen from my other posts I love Tikka rifles and I build myself quite a few switch barrel rifles. My current goal is building a European switchbarrel. This all started with my love for the 6.5x55 Swede an then I started looking into other cartridges that come from across the water.

I know tikka chambers a few of these calibres like 7x64, 8x57 and 9.3x62. All of which would compliment the 6.5x55. That said most people who buy these rifles aren’t removing the barrels for builds so I’m struggling to source these barrels without buying full rifle builds. I am starting to think about buying rifles swapping barrels and selling them but want to avoid that risk.

With the 9.3x62 specifically I’m even struggling to find barrel blanks to send to a smith. So should I give up the hope and buy a full rifle or just keep holding out and get this project done ?

Does anybody know where to get a 9.3 blank in Canada and anyone who has this reamer ?

Cheers,
B

the struggle is real to find anything on the shelf these days, but are you saying you can't get something within a 8-10 week lead time?

Well the issue is finding a blank in the 9.3 caliber. It seems the usual suspects I would look at for barrels don’t go up to that size and being an odd ball size it’s not even common among the people that do. The only one I’ve found so far is a Wilson blank for I am hoping for something in a heavier contour than the #5.5 they have.

IBI only goes up to a 338 and that’s pretty common. I am going to likely reach out to elr shooters and see where they are getting things. Ideally I wanted to find something in Canada but I’m doubtful at this point.

Once you get the barrel thing sorted out - consider the cartridge length - a fair difference between 6.5x55 and 9.3x62 - you will likely want / need an action with magazine and feed rails that will handle both. I suspect, but do not know for sure, that is why Husqvarna used to chamber their m94/m96 sized small ring Mauser actions in 9.3x57 - without a bit more fussing, that action's fixed magazine is not really long enough for standard 9.3x62 ammo. STIGA, and probably other companies, modified those actions to accept 30-06, so I presume it could also be done for 9.3x62 - just not sure if both would want to feed from same Mauser type action (?) - maybe they do (?) - I suspect each might need / want separate detachable magazines which usually incorporate their own feed rails into the magazine "lips".

Of course, the above is likely irrelevant if your proposed "switch barrel" rifle is a single shot.

Intersurplus has E.R. Shaw blanks in 9.3, but threaded for Mauser actions. There is probably enough meat on the breach end to cut the existing threads off and re-thread for the Tikka. Length is 26" so there should be enough to finish off at 24" if you want it that long.

All the “info” you posted is irrelevant/wrong

So the action, magazine and other issues are basically non existent because I will be using a Tikka T3X action. Tikka Chambers all cartridges in the same action and just has varying length bolt stops. I have been playing around with switch barrels for a while now and Tikka is the way to go except you can't run things like the 300 PRC or extra long/large magnum cartridges.

Because the .30-06 and 9.3x62 are similar lengths. (3.34" and 3.29" respectively.) I plan to just run a .30-06 magazine if factory is need. I also run aftermarket magazines for my Tikka's that allow for much more variation. Currently I run .338 RCM, 6.5 PRC and 6.5x55 Swede all out of the same magazine and it is designed to fit other cases like .30-06 and 300 WM. Thus that should solve my magazine issue as well. ( I have a 300 WM barrel on the way and will be test that out as well.)

I appreciate the info and probably should have added more to my original post to clarify I had other things solved or figured out until I try it.

I will be talking to a smith about these barrels as well to see if its possible.

The last 9.3 barrel blank I bought was a McGowan from Bits of Pieces in Delta (Barry Jensen, (604) 946-6168). It was a few years ago but his website says he is still a distributor for McGowan.

Might be worth a phone call.
