Coming home from USA, buy gun powder, what US laws apply

I hear through the grape vine that you cannot go to the states and buy gun powder and bring it across the border, US laws. It says in the Canadian Customs you can bring like 24 pounds of powder back. You can bring back 5000 rounds of ammo.
Anyone know where this US law information is found?

You need export permit for smokeless. Not sure about BP. Don't do it, it's not worth savings.

I'll play the devil's advocate here. Even though importing components is a no-no powders and bullets are definitely cheaper in the states.

I recently bought some 224 Nosler competion bullet at $25/100, the same item is listed at $18 at midway USA. Same for powder, 1Lb of H335 cost me $27, at midway USA it is listed at $19.

Exporting components from the U.S. without their export permit violates their laws. Get caught and you will arrested, charged and never be allowed back into the States. The Homeland Security types take their job very seriously too.
"...where this US law information is found?..." Rummage around on the U.S. Department of State and the Department of Commerce web sites. It's a daunting thing to do though.

Well.... to clairify, I'm talkin about retail. Michigan and NY retail. Gander Mtn, places like that. Boolets are the same price I pay here.
Once in a while y'find a sale... Like the time I found 500 packs of Sierra 168gr HPBT Match.308's for $99, but not often.

See Section 121.1, Category V, paragraph b.

The definitions are very technical, and I don't claim to know whether or not they encompass cannister-grade smokeless powders.

We may well be getting screwed on price but I'm not sure. Andrew at Higginson powder has told me his shipping costs and they they are absurd. I think he is an honest guy. I would think Canadian dealers have to carry more insurance and invest in more costly handling and storage proceedures than U.S. dealers, hence the price difference.
