OK, I ordered a mp-153?

I said if anyone sold these mp-153's for under $500 I would buy one and give it an honest try. Well, Epps had them for $519 with 4 chokes, sling swivels and walnut stocks..........close enough.

I have read about needing to break these guns in with 100 rounds or so of heavier loads before they will reliably cycle trap and skeet loads.

All I have in the cabinet right now to use for break-in is:

10 boxes of 2-3/4" (3-3/4dram) 1-1/4oz of #6 lead

4 boxes of 3" (1550 fps) 1 1/8th oz of steel BB's

4 boxes of 2-3/4" (3-1/4 dram) 1 1/8th oz of #2 lead

40 boxes of the promo Federal (3dram) 1/18th oz lead trap loads


Do you think I can get away using the 1-1/4oz of 6's for break in?? or is this not heavy enough?

I'd fire those BBs save the lead.
But yeah either should work.

You'll love the gun but just to give you a heads up, the walnut stocked guns might feel a bit weird in the grip area. You may prefer a synthetic but you can always get one later.

thanks for the info

The reason I went for the wood stock gun is I found them a little thinner in the grip area and that should be better for my girlfriend who will likely shoot this guns a bit.

I also went with the walnut stock because I hate the hollow 'clunk' you get in your earmuff when shooting synthetic stocked shotguns.
 
I'd really like to hear a range report when you get this shotgun. I would like to see one in person and see how it fits me. I'd go with the synthetic 26 inch version.

I went to bass pro over chrismas and played with one. Seems pretty nice. Fit and finish aren't the greatest, on par with norinco's stuff. Few guys at work has them, haven't heard anyone compliant about them.

Anyways. The local walmart here had the 1-1/4oz lead federals on clearout for $7 a box. Just a heads up. If you can find them in #6 shot they make a real good turkey load. Or you can spend 5 times that for the same thing but the box will say 'turkey load'. Your choice.

I own 2 of these guns. Very happy with them. Here is what I recommend for breaking in:

- Do not play with the gas adjustment valve. Leave it at the position set originaly by the factory.

- Anything 2-3/4" with at least 1-1/4oz load is fine for breaking in the gun. Of course the 3" BB loads are fine too.

- After about 50 - 60 rounds try some of the 2-3/4" 1-1/8oz loads. If they cycle fine then the gun is broken in. If not go back and use some more of the heavies and try again until the 1-1/8" loads cycle reliably.

- Once broken in properly, most guns will also cycle the lightest target loads as well. If not, then you may have to adjust the gas valve towards light loads. But don't forget to put it back to the original position when reverting back to the heavy loads.

I had some Winchester loads from Wallyworld (cheapos) that would not cycle on a cold day, i messed with the gas sytem for awhile and finally switched to a cheap federal load from Crappy T, no problems whatsoever. The winnies also gave me a hard time in a pump so I gave them all away.

For those who have the synthetic but do not like the hollw sound, take the stck off, lightly sand the INSIDE. Place some kind od tube (conduit, paper towel core, copper piped etc) over you access to your stock screw and fill with spray foam.
I did this with a rifle with great success.

The gun came in of Friday.

All looks fine, the walnut actually has some figure to it, nothing like the plain ass ho-hum wood I was expecting. It seems much lighter than I remember but I guess thats a good thing. The forearm fits nicely and is finished well. The butt stock protruded beyond the steel in a few placed but not worse than my 870. Recoil pad looks like a relic and I may replace it with one with a radiused top but its functional.

The gun didnt come with a plug. I'm gonna call Epps tonight and seem if they have any?? I made one out of a piece of a 7 1/8th inch piece of wooden dowl so I could take it out and run a few rounds through it and not have to worry the CO's giving me a hassle.

I put 35 rounds of 3" steel through it, all seems well. It really soaks up the recoil. I didnt pattern it, maybe this weekend if the weather is better. Even after 35 rds the action is noticeably smoother when worked manually than it was out of the box.

If there is something I will complian about it is the finish on the barrel and reciever. I new ahead of time that the finish on these guns is mickey mouse and I wasnt dissapointed. :rolleyes:

I will update more after this weekend if I get a chance to bang away some more lead.
 
These guns only recently started coming with plugs.
There were a ton of guys a few years ago on PEi, who bought them new and never checked for a plug. A few charges were laid and then later dropped as they were believed to be honest (albeit Stupid) mistakes
