Thoughts on bolt actions?

Hey everyone, I’m looking into getting a bolt action for under 1500 or so (with scope), does anyone have any suggestions and preferences? I’d want it to be fine going out about 400 yards but that’s probably the farthest I’d need, maybe 500. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Are just looking for a rifle for casual plinking or will you be using it for hunting, competition etc. More info helps?

Do you reload or do you plan to buy ammo?

If it's just casual plinking and you don't reload I'd go with a 223 Remington, match ammo is relatively cheap compared to larger cartridges.

I just be doing some casual shooting, no reloading. Thanks for the suggestion!

I'd go to a local gun store and shoulder a few rifles to see which ones fit you well.

I'm not that savy on scopes within your rifle and scope budget but I've read that arken scopes have a good rep and they are within youre price range at about $600. You can probably swing a tikka or howa/weatherby vanguard (both made by howa) at that price

The action isn't nearly as important as the barrel and glass when it comes to a range rifle.
There are lots of great .223's on the exchange for a non hand loader , and a .223 will go to 500 all day long. Some of shoot them out to 900 with sling'n'irons accurately, but that is with hand loads.

Caliber? Classic wood and blue steel? Plastic stock? SS metal? Detachable mag or floor plate? Open sights or not? Chassis/tactical type rifle? Big powerful scope?

So many variables, narrow your criteria so we can help you better !

I know the action doesn’t matter a ton, I’d just like a bolt right now. I’ll definitely look into those.

Get a good condition used Ruger and used Leupold scope. Easily in your $ range. Leupold has lifetime warranty,Ruger is good value for quality for a starter rifle. Get a common caliber, can't go wrong with a 308. If you are really new to shooting, get a 22 rifle first.

A Tikka T3X in 308 caliber (or 6.5 Creedmoor) and a Leupold 3X9 or 2.5X10 (externally adjustable turrets are the best for target shooting but not necessary) will easily do 500 yds and there is a lot of factory ammo selection (match, hunting and plinking) available and reasonably priced. It is fairly decent for recoil, quite accurate and gives long barrel life.

It gives you the option to go hunting if you so decide at a later date (223 doesn't really give you that option). Resale value should be quite good if it happens that priorities change.

Good Luck and welcome aboard.
