I am currently back to working on a repro stock for a P14 and need a measurement if someone can do it for me. I need to know what length it is from the muzzle to the front of the forestock metal end cap. Reason is so that if I can snag a bayonet I want the dang thing to fit properly!! From looking at pictures it looks like it has to be fairly accurate to fit over the barrel and the bayo locking lug.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I believe that you will find that it is the wood that is at the far end of the fore-stock - sort of protrudes through that stock "cap". See picture below - is a RE P14 Mk.1 in a random P14 stock - cartouche is no longer readable on the butt, so I do not know which manufacture made that stock. Front sight carrier has been removed from that barrel, although that is "matching number" barrel to that RE receiver. If you need more precise dimension or specifics about this one, just send PM or email to me. I think your critical dimension will actually be the cross screw hole through the fore-stock, for the cross screw that will anchor that "cap" in place.

My measurement is just a smidgeon under 3 3/4 to the front of the metal end cap with no wood protruding. So mine has to be close to where it should be, but I am not 100% sure.

When i said "protruding" that might have been a bit misleading - on most all that I have worked on, that wood is "flush" with the metal end cap - appears to be a system - bayonet handle slot clicks to the mount stud on that metal cap, yet that metal cap is positioned by it's cross screw into the wood - then there is a shoulder in the wood at the rear of that metal "cap" - I only have one bayonet to try for fit - I do not know how much "slop" was originally in that system - various guns and various bayonets all seemed to go together well enough for "government work".

I am going to have to find a bayonet to make sure i have a proper fit. It should be close, but who knows. On this repro stock there is no shoulder on the wood at the rear of the cap, it fits flush with the rear of the cap. A measurement from the muzzle to even the center of the bayo stud on the cap would work.

Icehunter: four pictures below - I quickly got some parts together - hope that you can make sense from the pictures shown.

There is no "stacking swivel" or cross screw on that "end cap"; no front hand guard in place; no front sight element in that front sight carrier - except for that wood stock (unknown maker), all the parts that should be marked, are stamped "R".

Icehunter - measurement shown in last picture has tape measure end on that wood / front end of that "cap" - is not from that bayonet stud.

The last pic is perfect. I am only about 1/16 of a inch difference at max from your measurement to mine. At least this way I know it should work and can continue on with this lil project. Thank You, its muchly appreciated..

I was playing with those parts again - trying to figure out what dimension is critical - turns out to be considerable "slop" in there - as if the bayonet hilt "ring" simply slides over the muzzle and can not come up tight to that front sight carrier - I imagine the design was that the face of that hilt had to be to the rear of the muzzle, to allow the rifle to be fired when the bayonet was mounted. Four more pictures below - first two show difference of relationship between bayonet and that "cap" - with the stud engaged into the bayonet handle - roughly a 1/16" play there - might be a function of this stuff being worn, or as originally designed? - last two pictures show difference in dimension to bayonet hilt - whether that "cap" pushed forward or pulled back - in both cases that latch was "latched".
