458 win mag

Thanks Dogleg, I will try and make it work! I found some 400gn Speer bullets 50 for $50, they look like they would be for lever action with the flat maplate/nose, but it will get me going!

They will work Speer also has a 350gr they say is designed for the .458 win mag sits out higher in the case.

Budget Shooting Supplies has good prices on Campro jacketed spitzer bullets 450gr and 500gr. For practice bullets the price is hard to beat.

I am liking the .458 more and more lately realizing how useful and how easy it can be to load for. smokeless with the numerous powders that will work and even some that can be made to work(case full of 20mm surplus powder on top of a booster charge) or can even be loaded with black powder like a .45-90. With an iron mold like the 485gr available specifically for the win mag you can even cast zinc bullets that will weight about 300gr but have the length of the 485gr.

Since Bison are on the menu I’ve got a mono load that might suit you. The 350 grain TSX over 69 grains of H4198 put out 2650 fps and was my attempt at getting 458 performance with 375 recoil and trajectory that at least resembled the 375. I crimped on the second groove. The load wasn’t even particularly hot; I took it up to 71 grains without issue, but at 69 it shot to the same POI at tradition ranges as the heavy bullets which was more useful than whatever higher velocity I gained. Never did chronograph the higher load, but shot around 60 asiatics and I don’t know how many pigs with the 69 grain version.

I have been shooting .458 WM rifles for 30+ years... I love the bigger bores on bears and moose and have taken quite a few deer in the swamps with them too. A couple years ago I sold my Ruger No.1-H in .458 WM and kept my RSM in .458 Lott, then built a stainless Carbine in .458 WM for fast handling situations. I have loads from 350 - 500 grains with various powders, mostly H4198 on the low end and H335 on the high end and H4895 for reduced bear loads. I use filler with reduced loads although it is not strictly required, I feel it improves consistency shot to shot. If you like, I can PM my load notes on the understanding that you should safely work up your own loads for your rifle.

What rifle do you have, I did not see that noted?
