Just before the ban I picked up a French pistol in 32 French Longue, and only just got around to starting to reload it. Unfortunately the only powder I have is 700-X, just wondering if anyone has any recipes for this calibre with this powder? I've tried 1.9gr already and it didn't even move the slide. The only close comparable I could find online was for 7.62Tokarev and that was over 5gn which seems like an absurdly high amount of powder. Unfortunately my local shop doesn't have much in pistol powders at the moment and since UPS no longer ships to my area ordering anything online is impossible.
Using 85gn bullets.

700X is good fast powder. I use it in 30Luger (7.65x21) which runs good with 6.2gr of 700X. The French ammo is straight wall so unlike 30 luger doesn't have volume as no shoulder. I would try 4.5 gr and go up. 1.9gr is way too low
Many thanks, I was using the max load for 32 acp as my starting point, but I shall make the adjustments.

"Cartridges of the World" (9th Ed.) lists the following load for the 7.65 French Long.
77 gr. cast bullet (Lyman #311252) + 3.6 gr. of Unique gives 1100 fps.

"The Handloader's Manual of Cartridge Conversions" lists the following load:
85 gr. cast lead bullet + 2.3 gr. of Bullseye gives 1000 fps.

"The Home Guide to Cartridge Conversions" (George Nonte Jr.) lists the following:
80 gr. FMJ bullet + 2.5 gr. of Bullseye gives 1000 fps.

Well it has take a little over a month, but I finally got back out to the range and did some more testing. Brought out some loads of 3.5, 4, 4.25, and 4.50 grains of 700-x, all 4 cycled and ran flawlessly. I was seeing some slight high pressure signs at 4.5gr (some minor flattening of the primers).
As I will mostly just be plinking, I think I'll stick the the 4gr loads as they're quite pleasant to shoot and reasonably accurate.
I don't presently have a chronograph, so I can't give any muzzle velocities, but if I ever get one, I'll update my data.
As with most things, YMMV, so anyone looking to use these numbers should start low and work up to here, what works in my gun might not work for you.

yes 4.0 grains of 700x is happy medium in most straight case cartridges. 38special and 7.62ng give good performance, but again these are not need to cycle the action
