Looking to get back out hunting now that I have more time. What’s everyone’s opinion on a 308 for an all around hunting rifle. I mainly be hunting deer but there’s lots of moose and bears around so I’m looking for something that would be a good fit for everything. I got a couple different ones I’ve been looking at for a while but still can’t settle on the caliber so I’d like some input.

I would say 308 is ideal for your purposes. Lots of factory ammo available (hunting, plinking and match) at somewhat decent prices.

That being said 30/06, 270 or 6.5 Creed in that order are also good choices

I picked up a Browning A BOLT 3 in 308 a few months ago, I like it.
Seems to send a 150 grain with repeatable point of impact out to my self imposed distance limit of 250 yds

What distances are you likely to be shooting to?

Are you concerned about recoil?

Do you reload?
I’d like to say usually not more the 300 yards but who knows for sure. As for recoil I’m not overly concerned, yet lol and I’m not sure about reloading yet but do have a couple buddies that would let me hang out in the garage and load up for an evening.

308 and 30-06 both have large amounts of available factory ammo in various weights.

As per PSE the 270 Win is also a caliber you might look at.

As my comment to his, I prefer the old 6.5x55 Swede over the new 6.5 Creed. Deer and bear with 140's and 160's for moose.

I have a 30-06 loaded with 180s for moose.
308 has 150s for bear
30-30 lever with cast 170s for deer.

Veriety is the spice of life.

I agree the Creedmore is meh but if one ever crossed my path at a stellar price I would be inclined to get it.

.308 would be just fine. Actually just finished a .308 build that is my backup rifle/grab an go rifle while I’m fiddling with other things.

6.5x55 Swede is fun. I’ve used a few different 6.5s over the years but only kept my 6.5x55 and 6.5PRC.

338 Federal would be fun.

7mm08 would work as well as numerous cartridges others have mentioned.

The big thing to be aware of is projectile choice and limiting yourself to its design and use case. Monolithics have a minimum impact speed so for factory loadings be aware of that.

I like my .308 so I wouldn’t hesitate to take it with me. I just tend to be playing with other cartridges at the time. (338 RCM is my new favourite.)

lol now to just convince my wife that I need a different gun for outing and I’d be happy. I figure once I have one she won’t notice the difference when I pull a different one out.

My Tikka T3x stainless laminates in 30-06 and 6.5x55 look pretty much exactly the same :D
