Factory ammunition is currently extremely hard to find and expensive when you do. Basically a reloading proposition if you want to shoot any amount. Cases are currently hard to find and sell out quickly when available. Once your setup to reload its an easy cartridge to work with.

Stittsville Shooting Range got some 44-40 in last week. They can get more from their supplier.

Accuracy Plus also got in some 44-40 last thursday as well.

So, 44-40 as well as Hornady ammo is starting to come in stock more frequently.

I haven't seen 44-40 for sale in a long time, it's best to get the components and just reload it then you will always have ammo
