On Saturday, at the Regina show, an older gent told me about a Turkish 1893 he had at home. He said it had a magazine cut-off. Sunday, he brought it to me so I could have a look at it. I know they exist, I handled another one a few years back at the Regina show. It came from the Dardanelles. In fact, they both did. The one showed to me Sunday had a hunk of wood missing, lining up with a chunk out of the barrel, just ahead of the rear sight. Looked like a bullet struck it.

Battle scars are cool. Always wonder about it.

Lucky for me I like guns with character

The real backstory is likely lame, but you always wonder.

Hi John, do you happen to have any pics of that rifle? Thanks

Would be cool if it was from Gallipoli but without supporting documentation I would be dubious. When the evacuations occurred a huge amount of material was left behind and I doubt if anything that was not essential was evacuated. Also there is very little Canadian connection to the Dardanelles. The NF regiment was there relatively briefly and saw relatively little action and I think there was some Cnadain medical pers over there but nothing else.

Lots of brits and anzacs moved to Canada after the war.

Also, people came and went from gallipolli during the battle, not just during the evacuation.

It’s possible this was from the battle, but without provenance, it’s just a cool story.

It is a war capture all that stayed in Turkish service were converted to 8mm. Just what war is the question. A 1893 Turkish Mauser could have been captured in a bunch of different wars. First Balkan War, Second Balkan war, WWI, Greco-Turkish war of 1897, Greco-Turkish war 1919-1923, a huge number of smaller conflicts, etc.

Lots of opportunities for other nations to end up with one. Still quite a uncommon find, not many kicking around I have only seen two for sale since I started collecting.

Even more uncommon with a magazine cut off.

Back in the day when I was collecting Mausers, one of the "hen's teeth" was an 1893 martially marked model with a magazine cut off.
