Update. The .30-06 is good enough as a short range deer rifle.

Thomas Pigion says so! :p

If you want a rifle for longer shots or other game, you must now shoot a .300 WSM. I wonder if the elk have heard this yet? But once the word starts getting around, .30-06 bullets will start bouncing off of them like rubber balls...

But whatever you do, don't question Thomas Pigion.

Thomas Pigeon from Canada in the Rough? .30-06 for short range deer? Is he getting paid by someone to talk nonsense like that? Maybe he gets royalties for every .300 WSM convert!:D

I've never shot or hunted elk, but there's a slew of fellas out there really big on using large magnums for this animal. Are elk harder to knock down than a moose? Yet I see others hunting them with .270's....hhhmmm. Magnum Mania?

I've not hunted elk yet either, but as with other animals, its shot placement that kills them. But from what I understand, they are one tough SOB.

I don't put too much thought into what the Pigeon man says.;) Maybe Stoeger has a bunch of .300wsm laying around and want him to push them.:)

Wow, I'm glad that I all my elk and moose where either a bow, muzzleloader, or .270 Win especially given the 30-06's & it's marginal performance:rolleyes:.

that's NOTHING- i have back issues of GUNS AND AMMO magazine that advocate the 338 win mag as the MINIMUM cartridge with premium bullets- well. we with the '06 and 308s KNOW BETTER- just have to sneak closer and MAKE IT COUNT- this involves both practise with the rifle to make sure it hits where it looks and a good knowlege of the vitals of our prey

Don't think I'd take anything from TV as gospel, let alone radio, newspapers or magazines. But many do, apparently.
I've learned from watching TV and movie stars in action films that the best way to shoot is to close my eyes momentarily each time I squeeze off a shot.

Gee I wonder how thousands of Deer, Boar, and Moose are harvested in Sweden each season with the 6.5x55 Swede? Must be lucky shots. :D

I'm gonna have to go to the freezer and apologize to the elk and moose. I really shouldn't have shot them from so far away. I feel ashamed now:redface:

If the .30-06 is a crappy short range deer gun, what the hell am I going to do with my new .270 WSM? Maybe it will do as a medium range varmint gun:rolleyes:

I haven't shot any Elk myself but I have heard from people hat have shot both that they seem to be a little harder to put down then a Moose.

With the proper loads a 30-06 is plenty of gun for any game animal in north america, except the larger bears . Then something from the magnum menu is in order.

I was told recently by a guy who is going bison hunting that the outfitter (or canned hunt operator in this case) asked him what rifle he was going to bring

he said "30-06"

guy laughed and said "you need a 300 short magnum to kill a bison"

amazing how 200 fps makes a cartridge go from marginal to excellent :D
