Update. The .30-06 is good enough as a short range deer rifle.

There is a thread in the Alaska Hunting forum on Accurate Reloading, in which F&W officers did a survey of hunters and the calibers/cartridges they are using.

As you would expect the .30-06 is number 1, followed by the .300WinMag, the .338WinMag and then the 7mmRemMag.

I've hunted in the Yukon. I went there thinking that bringing my .338WM and .375H&H would be "standard choices" Wrong.....the -06 rules over there there and they drop everything with it. Gawwwwd, I hate that thing
