What’s the deal with Wild Boar?

In sask I know government trapping efforts work. Numbers trapped annually were over 500 a few years ago. For the last couple years number have decreased to under 100 annually. That's just what the government caught. Then factor in nearly everyone on a backroad has some sort of firearm year round for hog, coyote or beaver. A dead hog is a dead hog period. Don't think for a second that it's better to let them live in peace lol wouldn't take long to become a big problem.

Will boars will survive hunting pressure and all effort to trap and eradicate them.
They have survived hundreds of years of hunting pressure in Europe!

And even if you could eradicate them in Canada .... they will migrate back in from the US ....
What are we going to do? Build a huge wall/fence along the US border?

It is time to accept the idea that wild boars are now part of the Canadian landscape ..... and that they are just another species to be hunted and controlled ....

Raise the incentive to kill them
Gov't is reluctant to have their hands in bounties or rewards but an NGO could
When the table fare is poor, there needs to be another reason to target invasives

At one time in Alberta you could go with a group of friends on a so called canned hunt. There was an outfit near Rosebud and then also near Mayerthrope that offered hunts on a farmers land where he ran wild boar on several fenced sections of bush land. It was usually a weekend affair and was a lot of fun. You stayed in a cabin and as soon as you dropped an animal the farmer showed up with a tractor with front end loader and transported it to his quonset where he then gut and skinned it and wrapped it in cheesecloth for the trip home.

Cost was around 500 and was purely a private sale between you and the farmer. If you got no animal you didn't pay. If you only shot a piglet you still paid
The double smoked hams you got from the butcher after were delicious.
I'm pretty sure the mayerthorp farm is still running Hog Wild is the name, $1000 for a meat pig.... jfc lol

I just looked up their website. Glad to see they're still in operation. I went for a hunt with friends in the 90s there and got a nice sow. Looks like a stand up operation. Might have to investigate further.;)
