This little Husqvarna 1640 carbine in 30-06 is a shooter, 3/4”@100 with 178gn ELD-X(not my first choice for moose but it will do for a back up rifle) with a 2.5-8 scope! The rifle is 7lbs as seen in the picture! Those Husky are great rifles for the money! IMG_0684.jpegIMG_1151.jpeg
 
Nice rifle Sir, my Rem. 700 doesn't like the 178 grain ELD-X.

The terrain and distances I'm going to next week means I'll be taking my my Marlin Guide Gun in 45-70 sitting under a Leupold 1.5-4 scope and loaded with Federal Hammer Down 300 grain.
Seemed to work well for me last week on a nice Moose sized target.
75 yards, off hand on 4 power, and bang on after a quick windage adjustment.

I love my 1640 in Thuddy-Aught-Six. Mine's got a less fancibilitous stock, but by bejeezus, is it nice to shoulder. It's a much steadier hold for me while standing than my modern 30-06, despite the barrel being 2" longer.

I would suggest that personal preference would answer that question. There are more than a few chamberings that would do anything a 30-06 would do. FWIW .... The 30-06 would be what I'd use as well. :)

Oh no, the 30-06 is often my choice for moose, in fact I got more moose with the caliber than other i’ve used! I was referring to the ELD-X bullet!
