Ultrasonic cleaners

Me too. I'm anxiously awaiting the results from your test, but so far it's not looking very promising for the affordable sonic cleaners....
 
Did a quick clean this morning on 70 cases. This is what they looked like before:

After 20 minutes in the sonicator and here is how they looked:

Crazy Davey, did you try just soap and water? I would rather not use the vinegar but had to, just curious if your machine made the brass clean without vinegar.

BTW, got the part in the mail today, thanks. Hopefully I'll be making some different parts of my own before March break.

Nope, I have only used vinegar/water and soap solution so far. On one of the Fridays I work I will have some time to experiment a bit.

I got around to giving mine a try and am getting the same results as crazy davey is but dident get a chance to take pictures . These thing work pretty good ,Crapy thing is I just got 2 slightly used tumblers given to me yesterday so It is a toss up on witch one do I keep as I cant see needing both an ultrasonic and 2 new tumblers+the one I already have . I will try to run some 243 brass though tonight and take some pictures
 
Just needed a bit more BS and the rince needed to be warm water as I just useing cold water . I think I got it figered now . It was just a bit of Dark purple on the rim on a few of them ,nothing in or on the cases

It gets them Clean as they can get ,I can do about 30 at a time . I dont have any beakers , I am just useing 2 drinking glass's , I can probly do more at a time if I did have beakers .

Now the question do I keep it or dose it go to the EE since I now have 3 tumblers?
 
They're fanstastic for cleaning parts too. Will strip plating off though. Bransonic made good desktop units. Never rest anything on the bottom of the tank or the transducers will vibrate themselves right off the tank, if they don't shatter first.

I guess your question is answered :).

I did 60 more cases today, 20 minutes and they were spotless. It takes me about ten minutes prep time. No more tumbling cases for hours on end for me :wave:

damn... pics are good man! alway nice to see and yours are in focus and have great detail... doesn't get better than this...

do you have to use glass in these things? I mean couldn't you use maybe something like those plastic trays like some posted earlier by danger tree for an idea, I got some that have holes through the bottom etc... does the plastic cut down on the surface action or something I know sweet #### about ultrasonic

it's just that you could position them more efficiently?
 
Beaker placement?

Say I have read on some other boards that the Ultrasonic action is more effective if you slightly suspend the beakers off the bottom of the cleaner, and of you fellows try this? FS
 
All the instructions I have read say don't put anything on the bottom of the tank. If you do, the transducers will be damaged or in some cases will actually come off the tank. The cleaning action is best if the item is suspended independently of the tank, especially for heavy items, not even hanging on the edge of the tank. I have seen two units where transducers were destroyed by containers etc. being put on the bottom of the tank - not my units, though one of them I got free and put a new tank and transducers in.
 
I've done the same and it was interesting and worked as shown, but it's a messy, slow waste of time. Super clean has no advantage to the reloader (accuracy, case life, etc.), in fact I found that the primer pockets became "squeeky clean" and the primers were hard to seat - all it does it make the cases look nice. Do the top Bench Rest guys do this?

If I have a very dirty case that I for some reason don't want to discard, I soak it in a 50/50 Vinegar water mixture for five minutes and might use my Ultrasonic cleaner before I rinse it on clear water and dry. That removes black spots caused by water (as in Range Brass).

Otherwise the tumbler when and if the cases get dirty on the outside is more than good enough.
 
BCboy, are yours just as clean as davey's inside the case? Also what model of ultrasonic cleaner do you have. How do these things work? Do you put the glass container with the solution and cases in the machine, or do you just put the cases in the ultrasonic cleaner and pour in the solution and turn on? When you say not to put anything directly on the bottom of the machine, do you mean it must sit on what appears to be a plastic grating on the bottom?
Sorry for all the questions, but this looks like something I need. I like to have my cases clean inside and out.

Guys I kinda think this is a waste of time and money. All I use is the Birchwood Casey Case Cleaner solution you can buy for $8. It mixes up something like 40L of cleaning solution, and you just soak your deprimed cases in it for 3 minutes or so and they come out quite clean. Then I use a little primer pocket brush to take out whatever is left in the pocket and I'm ready to reload.
I could be totally wrong, but I really don't think cases need to be brand new clean to be accurate. My reloads work just fine in .223, 30-06 and 303 Brit.
