Border crossing with game meat question

We are planning a trip to Manitoba for deer and plan on returning through the US. I've reached out to US border protection and the USDA but have not yet received a reply.
Does anyone have recent experience with transiting through the US with game meat and what was your procedure / experience like ?
 
I do it quite regularly. I hunt in Southern Ontario and live in Northern Ontario. I only bring processed frozen meat through as I have it butchered in Southern Ontario. I've been asked about it and declared it everytime and no issues over the past 5 years ( minus the Covid years). Ontario has it's own restrictions for out of province deer as well.
 
Not sure about the states, but Ontario has rules to control CWD, copied below from the Ontario website.

If you hunt cervids out of province, you can only bring back to Ontario:

  • butchered, deboned and packaged meat
  • a cleaned skull plate and antlers
  • tanned hides and capes
  • finished taxidermy mounts
It’s illegal to bring any other body parts from deer species into Ontario. These rules apply to all members of the deer family, or cervids, which comprise more than 37 species.
 
The customs officers can be a wildcard even if your all legal.
We use to travel from Sarnia through the USA to international falls.
We stopped the US travel and stayed in Canada after a few complete , very complete vehicle inspections in the USA.

Never heard of any problems or requirements for transporting game meat within the province.

Bringing game meat into Ontario all you need to do is have it processed and claim it, the other way I have not tried recently, in the past it was the same process.

Correct, it has to be processed. Attempting to bring in an unprocessed deer with head, spine etc intact from the USA or another province will cause problems.
