Hey guys,

Looking to purchase my first beretta o/u. Checked few 686 but I think that I want something better quality. Maybe something from 690 series. Mostly will be using a gun for upland hunting but sometimes want to hit a sporting clay range.
Any advice much appreciated
 
New 2024 version of the 686 silver pigeon has the stellium barrel and lengthened forcing cones and the optima plus hp chokes which is all cutting edge and great value. You missed the $2588 field version 12g 28” barrel. Older versions are Mobil choke and standard barrels

I was looking at 690 field III. It comes with stellium barrel and hp chokes.
 
I don't think the 690 series is necessarily better quality than the 680 series in general but it depends on what models you are talking about. In fact if your comparing the older 680 and 682 series guns they are without question some of the best bang for the buck models that Beretta ever made and are most certainly better than the 692 which was a short lived model that had some problems.
As far as the basic 686 Field gun goes they are time proven and provide good value for the money even without the "stellium" barrels and hp chokes since the term "steelium" has precious little meaning as far as barrels go.
 
Only got to play with one 686, so I can't really speak on how inferior it is (if any) to other models... But I thought it was nice as anything I'd play with from Browning/Winchester... And in hindsight, should have probably kept it. (Even though it only had one trigger)

I have a 690 Field III. It is far to nice to use for upland game, but is get lots of use on the skeet field or Sporting Clays. I have plenty of other guns that I use for hunting. All the 686's that I looked at had pretty plain wood, the 690 has much a nicer piece of lumber on it.
 
It's not unusual for Italian gun manufacturers to have a lower end gun and 686's are generally viewed as the bottom end gun by Beretta. They are meant to be used and used hard where fancy wood isn't a requirement for the job. The 687 model is essentially the same gun as the 686 but generally sports nicer wood and may have a few ascetic upgrades over the 686 such as possibly a color case hardened receiver or more engraving.
 
I have one 686 and two 687 and have owned others in the 680 series. All were excellent quality. Is it possible you are speaking of features rather than quality? Unless you are a masterclass shooter or a world class wingshot, I can almost guarantee that you won't score any better with a removeable trigger group, a high rib, a long forcing cone, engraved sideplates, aftermarket chokes, fancy wood and what the hell is steelium?

All that said, they are cool and that counts for something too.
 
Nothing wrong with Mobil choke 686 barrells they are heavier than the new Steelium barrels that are thinner and less muzzel heavy and the Opti Plus HP chokes have longer cones and pattern very well. I have both The Steelium swing much nicer with the longer barrels 30in plus. The 690 has had it's problems My buddy has a 694 I find it heavy and clubby I don't shoot it well but that may be just me.
