1000 yard shooting?

Depends. ;)

For many years I used fixed 16x scopes for VERY long range shooting, like out to 2000 yds long. Fixed power scopes have an advantage because they have fewer lenses so light transmission is better and the manufacturer can keep quality up and price down, so it a win-win for everyone.

I am in the process of moving over to higher power FFP scopes with matched reticle and turret systems. I have been running a Bushnell Match Pro 6-24x50 with MIL reticle and turrets. I like it so much, I just got hold of another one. Sadly this scope has been discontinued but there are a few of them still sitting at dealers. The price is extremely reasonable. I have used this scope out to 800 yds so far and it's been extremely consistent and reliable. Image quality and ease of use has been outstanding.

IMO very high magnification is not worthwhile at long distance, but is gonna depend on the rifle and style of shooting. Above 24x you are gonna run into problems with mirage.

FWIW I am going to put up a Sightron SIII fixed 16x40 target scope with MIL reticle up for sale, once the new Match Pro arrives. That scope has been a real good performer and is a quality piece of equipment.

For 1000 yds I like something between 16 and 24x seems ideal in average good conditions. The scope must hold zero and dial correctly and consistently.

To that end SWFA fixed power scopes work real well, I have 6x, 10x, 16x and a 20x, These are very durable. Also, Sightron III's dial and hold zero , as does the PST range of Vortex and I have a Leupold 6.5x20 that dials well.

I have used a 20x Unertl , Lyman 15x Super Targetspot, IOR 9-36x, Leupold Mk4 16x, B&L4000 6-24x Various Sightrons ( lately a S111 10-50) and a bunch ibhave forgotten about.
These are just to play with or for working up loads though.
When I compete out to 1K I take the scopes off and shoot with sling'n'irons.

Buddy has a 338 Lapua and is heading to PG for some kind of shoot
I’m guessing less than a couple g’s
$1000 he may be able to swing now
He may have some $$ coming
If so, the budget will go up

Thanks for the info.

If on a budget, look at the Athlon Helos BTR Gen2 6-24X56. I run this on my PRS and ELR rigs. Not an ideal paper punching scope but works great for plates and rocks.
