Well, my moose group was unsuccessful this year (WMU 2 in Ontario) so some of us are talking about doing a hog hunt in the USA. Ideally within a 12 hour drive from Detroit MI / Windsor ON. Our goal would be to bring back butchered meat for the freezer - we don't care about hogzilla or the big beasts - just food.

Asking if anyone has experience, recommendations, etc. Did a bit of internet searching and found a few places but having never hunted with an "outfitter" or paying someone to allow me to hunt their properties, I'd love some stories, what to do, what not to do, etc.

Our "pie in the sky" plan would be for 2-4 of us to drive down in a pickup truck, hunt hogs for 2 days (no idea if this is reasonable), then drive home (so a 4 day trip). Would be fine to stay on-site, or even a local hotel. I already have a Form 6NIA for hunting in the USA. I assume we'd pay the place to butcher hogs for us, and we'd shoot a few of the small to medium pigs as I've read that the bigger they are, the worst they taste. We'd bring coolers, and buy ice to keep the processed meat cold. Based on my research and experience deer hunting in Michigan, I can bring processed packaged meat back into Canada.

Thoughts? Stories?

no personal experience, but I had an uncle back in the day who used to go to michigan every year to hog hunt. made some awesome prosciutto from them.

Dry ice is great. Sold everywhere in the USofA..never had any trouble bringing venison home, I don’t expect pig would be any different as long as it’s butchered and labelled properly. Call CBsA and ask…

Your not going to be able to bring pig meat into Canada . Hard to get government inspected in to Canada let alone non inspected pig meat.
Wrong on this one.
I've bring cooler full of meat from a Texas hog hunt twice by plane.
Meat from hunting is not a problem. custom can ask to see à proof you have hunted it. Licence or outfitter bill will be ok.
Commercial meat as other requirements.

Me and my bro went hog hunting in Florida this June and brought back 2 coolers full of meat back on the plane and TSA and CSBA didn't even care or bat an eye at it.
We shot a big boar and a mid sized boar. Meat was a tougher then store bought pork but taste was not to far off. it was definitely good eating.
did a bunch of slow cooked pulled pork and bbq back straps.

I would suggest quartering it out for the coolers for the drive or fly home then do the rest your yourself or bring it to a butcher back home

also drive as far down south as you can. at least Georgia for great hog hunting so you can make the most of your 2 day hunt

Thanks for the info. Nice pics!

What sort of hunt are you looking to do? The places in AB and Sask are high fence hunts.

12hrs from Detroit will get you to Georgia. That's where I'd start my search if I was in your shoes.

Zero experience but I remember looking into Pennsylvania hog hunts years back.

Just did a quick google and it appears it’s still a thing with outfitters listed. Not far from Windsor at all. Much less driving

Ya i recommend not eating boar or bear unless you like parasites hanging out your bum
This!

I have never seen a black bear without hundreds of worms, tapeworms, worms in the meat, worms just under the hide, worms everywhere!......:(

I would not eat any bear meat, period. I know lots of guys do, but no thanks. Even high country alpine bears were full of worms, maybe our BC bears are just wormy. Absolutely gross. I don't care if its its frozen for two years and cooked to a piece of charcoal, with all those worms, I guess this adds more protein. Trichinosis is another concern.

Wild boars, I don't know, I've heard lots of gross stories about worms, and they taste like sh1t and eats like grandpas ole' cowboy boots. Maybe some juvenile piglets would taste better?......:)

And now the CWD threat here in BC. Makes a guy wonder if CWD is even real, or is it another Covid scam to stop hunting.

Who knows now a days anymore.........
