I'm a precision shooter by trade. I love nothing more than to hear my heart pounding while sitting behind the glass of a nice long range rig... waiting for that right moment to squeeze the trigger. I love it !

But...

I'm intrigued with the hype and dedication that some M305 shooters in this forum display. Simply, I'm on the fence.

Tell me, why should I invest in a M305 instead of a new precision .308? I'm a poor Saskatchewan boy and can only afford one or the other.

PS... Right now I do not have any rifle in .308.

you throw money and sweat and tears in, and not much makes it back out.

If you want a cheaper, more accurate bang for the buck.308 rifle, get yourself a good used Remington 788, Remington 600, or Savage 110. All of these will be more accurate, are much easier and cheaper to mount a scope on, and can have much better triggers.

The M305 / M14s offers something more visceral than precision. Sure you can dress it up with the latest stock and optics, but I think you need something of a bent for the nostalgic to really appreciate the rifle. Is it accurate? Somewhat. But that's not what it excels at. You need to enjoy the look and feel of it. The trigger's not light, it has that long two stage trigger common to military rifles, yet it suits the gun and takes nothing away from the experience. Sure, we can't use high capacity mags anymore, but there is a real joy in pushing 5 rounds down that well designed stripper clip guide. A scope is nice, but the iron sights somehow manage to produce an surprisingly tight group, and the front blade that covers a lot of landscape at 200 yards, somehow manages to put one into the near centre of an object that it more than covered at that distance. Get one. How could you regret it? Worst case scenario, you don't enjoy, but you end up passing the bargain priced gun onto someone else.

Some feel that the M14 is akin to crack cocaine.......once you pop, you can't stop. :p :p

Basically as Laz said, a basic bolt gun will be much more cost efficient.

On the other hand, the supply of M14s is dwindling....Marstar bought up the rest and they have two loads coming and then finito, complete, fertig......

Such is the case, you might as well just get one....
 
As long as it takes for a big enough market to develop to justify putting them back into production. Johnone has mentionned that there are two more containers coming, and then that's it.

If you want precision, buy Springfield NM for about 4K.

If you can sleep at night after getting 2-4" grouping @ 100 yards, buy
M305/M14S. 1" might be achievable, but not for long...

If you want to shoot long range, get a Sako or Kimber bolt in .308 with 22" or 24"
barrel.
 
inch groups at 100 yards are ENTIRELY feasable , provided you LOAD YOUR OWN- not factory- depends on the gun- as does everything else, as well as the shooter- and some guns will do that all day long too, mof, all my m14s ALWAYS SHOOT BETTER after the first box of 20 and they've had a chance to settle in- and your springfield nm or whatever may not shoot any better- the ONLY way to ensure that you get a top notch shooter right out of the box is the way the big boys do it- get a bunch of them, shoot them from rests , and the ones that group best are your "sniper " rifles- sound kind of familiar?the rest are parts guns- as far as i know, even springfield doesn't do that- they just take a standard rifle, put a better barrel on it, and add all the tricks that the nm calls for- it doesn't necessarily make it a better shooter
 
in the true days of the NM rifle, EVERY SINGLE PART intended for use was measured and inspected and only the parts showing blueprint dimensionally correct tolerances were used. from receivers to pins..... with no exceptions.
If a springfield armoury nm rifle was guaranteed to be built fom nothing but armourer selected NM usgi parts.... I might be willing to dole out 4000.00

If youwant a rifle that you can tweak/tune and get intimate with.... an m14 rifle can be tuned to be a great shooter. If yer looking to punch bullseyes all day long with minimal user mods/maintenance.... it's a no brainer.... get a bolt gun.

Just shoot the dang thing first before you go looking for TRW everything and NM bits! Spend your $400 on a good rifle....... (while the rest of us M14 junkies stockpile on USGI M14 crack.) :p

Ah yes, if only one could sit in a warehouse full of parts with a few sets of calipers and gauges....

THE M305 IS THE RIFLE VARIANT OF THE 1911A1 OF ASSESSORIZING.
If you're happy with bananna wood just use the stock M305.
Otherwise you'll spend considerable money in assessorizing the rifle to obtain the "Cool Factor". Lots of it is just sillyness. Look at the M14 thread in the Photo Album forum. Some of the M14zilla's are pretty outragious.

Why is it everytime a person tries to get information its like open season.

I don't want your praise... I simply wanted to know why some people are so dedicated to the M14S or the M305. I wasn't knocking it.

I've never shot one and I wanted to know what all the hype and fun was about. From the posts I've read it could be fun but man, I guess I set off a wild fire...

Thanks to the couple of people that made constructive posts.
 
Out of the box, U.S. GI M-14's had to group 5" or better at 100m to be accepted for service. I have seen many of the Chinese rifles do way better than that out of the box. Once properly tuned and set up (About $700.00) including bedding, these rifles have been known to out shoot some of the really expensive models produced by SA. I actually prefer working on the Chinese guns and have been forced to, on occasion, replace SA parts on SA Rifles with Chinese parts to make them work properly!!
If you are looking for a "Tack Driver" of a rifle, best look somewhere else. If, however you don't mind spending a bit more and do a little maintenance over the period you own the piece and like to shoot "Army guns" then buy one. As the fellow said before me, if you need to be convinced, don't buy it, you will be disapointed and hate the one who convinced you!
