Hi,

I am on here to get info a new shotgun for my son and rifle for me. Interested in a 20 gauge pump for 14 yr old and .30-06 for me. Any recommendations or potential guns for sale referenced would be great. Thanks!

30.06 is a solid choice, but the "which 30 Cal cartridge is best" argument is delightfully endless.

For a reasonably priced starter gun, the Ruger American is just fine.

Gen 2 has a muzzle break, but I am not a fan of those.

Ok, what is recommendation on cartridge then? And why

New Shooter ?

308.

Does everything needed, available, not too expensive, recoil is not severe.

If you want classic : 30-30 (and if anyone says "no", watch Paul Harrel's videos on why 30-30 is just fine).

If you want some punch : 30.06

If you want to punch hard : Magnum rounds

At the end of the day 30 cal gets the job done.

30-06 is a solid choice. Forum debates on "best" cartridge and rifle tend to be meaningless. Go to a gun shop and handle some rifles in your price range. There is no "wrong" choice, but I would avoid the Mossberg rifles.

Mossberg shotguns are a diiferent story than the rifles. Got my son a Mossberg Maverick pump in 20 gauge when he was 14. Worked well. It's far better quality than the Turkish shotguns in the same price range.

Both choices are good. You are going to want a .22Lr and maybe even a .223 if you’re new to shootinng to develop fundamentals. YMMV
Yes, thanks. I do have a .22 and was planning to get 30.06 for big game. Have traditionally been doing big game with my bow.
