1000 yard shooting?

I am a huge fan of my EP5 5-25x
I cannot speak to the durability or warranty, as I have not dropped it or abused it,

But I can say that it holds zero on 308win no problems. The turrets are great clicky and tactical feeling and the scope tracks 100% .
No fear of dialing back and forth. It works great and seems to work exactly as my laser rangefinder ballistic calc says.
Dial up 3.18mil —— OK NO PROBLEM. 32 clicks….. BRRRTT …. Aim dead centre … bang . 8” gongs at 350yd repeatedly.

It’s my first high-magnification scope, but I’m in love with it, especially for the price to performance I think is unbeatable.

You need 3.2 mils of elevation for your .308 at 350yds? Something's not right...

As to which scope to shoot to 1000yds, well that entirely depends on what size targets your buddy intends to shoot at. I first shot to 1000 with a 3.5-10x. These days I'm normally around 15-18x depending on how small the target is, how hard it is to resolve and what the mirage/atmospherics are like. You can't really go wrong with something in the 3-18, 4-20 or 5-25 range. That Vortex PST Gen 2 5-25 you were looking at is a nice optic in its price range.
 
Here is a 1000 yard target with a Berger Bullet box on one and a tape measure on the other one for reference .
That Berger Bullet box represents .4 moa at 1000 yards .
Most of your low power scopes RETICAL will cover your aiming point at this distance. RJ

I can’t recall the exact dial, I have the information and pictures on my old phone, so please forgive me.

PMC bronze 147gr (brass) 308win
@ 2550fps , from 16.5” 1:10 HB

From what I do remember I almost sure it was 3.14 or 3.06 or 3.16 , something like that.

I will look into this and inform if I was right or wrong, and by how much.
 
I have an older 4.5-20 Leupold mark 4 that works just fine.
I found that with the ballistics of 300 win mag it ran out of elevation at about 1800 meters. Paired it up with an Era-tac mount and was able to get out 24-2500.
At that range 300 is out of gas so that is the absolute max range. At least in my hands.
Have i lusted after more magnification? You bet i have but cost and the effect of mirage on my older eyes has prevented me from reaching for my wallet.
I have had several Leopold scopes and always recommend them.
 
Some odd suggestions for a .338 being thrown around....

Personally, a used NF NXS is a good choice for SFP or, for FFP, Burris XTRiii.. cabelas quite often have them on sale for <$1700
 
K'Looky, Should just narrow down the list of 'needs' to help make a decision
power range? sfp or ffp?
maybe warranty shouldn't be the deciding factor :confused:
 
F Class seems to like a really fine reticle, hashmarks in all four directions for fraction-of-a-click refinement and wind holds. One distance, and you're dialed into your basic solution for it.

PRS seems to like a Christmas-tree reticle for distance holdovers, so you can bounce between targets at different preplanned distances without having to take your eye off the glass to go dialing.
 
Went out yesterday and did some 500 yard shooting.
Nothing to impressing for groups.
Shooting table wasn’t top notch.
Wind was up.
Out of the seven rounds fired, five would of dropped a moose 🫎

He purchased a new Vortex Intensity 20-60x80 spotting scope.
It did a poor job of finding the holes in the target at 500 yards.

Any recommendations on what would work better?
 
shoot and see targets, the tricky part with spotting scopes and scopes and bullet holes at 500 is, some days you can see them, some days you can't, humidity, lighting, mirage, it's tough. glass is to good, you see the mirage, glass is low quality, imiage is dark and blurry. long range wifi shooting camera is the middle ground, but again, low quality poor image, of HD quality and great image, that one comes with a price tag
