Am I the only one who has noticed that literally NO vendor has .308/7.62x51 Norinco in stock??? Its the only truly affordable 7.62x51 and its complete disappearance is a very bad thing for 308 owners who are on the broke side. Do any vendors/suppliers in the know, know what the hell is going on? This stuff is supposed to be new production so you can't really tell me ''oh we ran out of surplus''.

I suspect products like this are imported in batches, rather than a more or less continuous flow.
Shipping can be an issue, as well as ports prepared to allow transit of ammunition.

Some vendor had a promotion a month ago here. It was german made .308 and from memory on par in term of price with norinco. This ammo casing was brass. Cant remember who it was. I was too broke to jump on it.

My Ca. Tire has lots of ammo, but I have not been in the ammo section for a while,
If you use your CT card you also save more, somethings arn't that cheap anymore.

I just checked Tenda and the Norma 147g FMJ is just a bit over $1, comparable to the Nor in spams, when they had some.

A couple or three years ago I bought 5 cases of the Norinco x51 from a guy. I asked him why he was selling it. His answer was something to the effect that the government was banning everything he had to shoot the ammo in. I also bought a good batch of the Hirtenberger reloadable stuff.

Tenda, which has generally good prices, has No .308 under $1 altho a couple at $1. There is some .223 is down to 0.69c in 1000 pks, and a few others still under $1. I've found Barnaul .223 pretty good and they have SP at under $20/box tx-in.

I bought a bolt gun in 762x39 for this reason.
Target rifle in .22
Trying to keep my cost per round down while covering as many bases for rifles.
I have no desire to reload. Used to for a target rifle years ago. And looking at some prices for consumables. It’s not cheeper anymore. Bulk or precision
So 762x39 made the most sense to me.

I bought a Ruger Ranch in x39, in case of my SKS getting locked up 😦 I get 2-MOA with Chinese MS And it shoots the Barnaul very well,ca 1-MOA. I bought a bunch b4 prices went nutz in '20. A LGS was closing so I scored a lot of stuff at low prices, even for back then.

I really want a 7.62x39 bolt gun, but they are hard to come by in left-hand and fetch a pretty penny when you can find 'em. Really hoping Ruger comes to the aid of lefties with the Gen2 American, they gave us a few options with the gen1 American but never anything in x39...

Otherwise I am in the same boat as you, 22lr is about all I can afford to shoot regularly with the way ammo prices have gone. I do reload, but that has gotten expensive too as most components seem to have doubled in cost since 2019 - that is if you can even find what you're looking for, we're still dealing with some pretty substantial droughts for some stuff, haven't seen the rifle powder I've been using on shelves for a few years now...
