Been getting into milsurp more recently and i just love carbines, any in particular you guys love shooting or just having in general?

I gotta go with the USGI M1 Carbine but, they are restricted class. They currently sell for ~$1000
There is a nice non restricted one for sale on the EE right now for $2000 I think
They are quite a rabbit hole for collectors
I have a restricted pal, am i allowed to purchase restricted rifles and just not pistols?

I've got limited experience with military carbines - having only fired an SKS and an M1 carbine. They were both fun to shoot.

Each of them has their own attractive features, but overall I've settled on the M1 carbine as my favorite of the two.

SKS advantages include:
  • a more powerful cartridge, but still reasonably soft shooting
  • simple field stripping
  • integrated bayonet (I know, it's useless really, but I still think it's cool)
  • it's solid and reliable
  • integrated magazine means you'll never be without one
  • cheaper ammo

M1 carbine advantages include:
  • it's a soft shooter
  • stock aperture sights (meaning the later style windage and elevation adjustable rear sight)
  • very light and handy
  • safety lever design is way better than the SKS
  • removable box mags are faster to reload (for me, anyway)
  • very simple gas block design
  • corrosive ammo for this rifle does not exist

Cheers,
Neil

I don’t know if this statement is entirely true. It may be for domestically produced .30 carbine ammo but I’ve read different things about the French and possibly Chinese manufacturers that have produced corrosive ammo. Also seen reports of ammo produced with berden primers that were potentially corrosive as well. Whether any of it is true I don’t know but I only run new domestic ammo through all my carbines to avoid any issues with crappy surplus ammo.

There is/was corrosive ammo for the M1 carbine
A few years back marstar had some in 30 cal ammo boxes for sale and they were sold as "components only" due to the fact that they said that some of it was believed to be corrosive and it is not recommended to shoot corrosive through the m1 because the gas system is not easily cleaned and removing the piston usually ends up in damaging the nut

Could been the South American sunken bardge ammo. Some had no powder, some was corroded. I had a bunch and it was hit or miss if it shot.
