7mm-6.5 PRCW

the Problem with a 284 Win in a short action is its COAL with heavier bullets and especiallywith MONO's as even the 145 s are long - The bullets are too stuffed in the case - It cannot get the real performance out of it but its a GREAT std lenght action cartridge thou - and Perfect in a T3X rifle ! RJ

In F class rifles we run COAL of 3.280 or more with 180-184 bullets at 2850 fps ( 30 " barrel ) but with only 54.5 gr H4831SC powder .
i can get well over 2900 fps if i pour more powder to it but brass life would go for a big sh*t !
If we had SRP brass would help a lot to brass life .
Although I completely agree with your statement Jim, I do not have that issue with my short action Browning A-bolt after the modifications I completed. Now would I like a little more room, sure. But not enough to give up my short action rifle.....:)

So, I see this 7-6.5PRCW was built on a short action but isn't it tight to seat the bullets long enough (which is typically best)?

I looked into this previously and was told that a short action will work except if you have to eject a live round then you would have to remove the bolt to get the round completely out as it wont clear the ejection port?

And does using a short action limit bullet seating due to mag size?

If a short action is compromised what is the best fit? XM? Long?

It will not clear the ejection port of some actions ? RJ

Yes of course a SA will restrict your OAL when using heavy bullets, I have my 175 Berger Elite Hunters at 2.300” (ogive), I have one built on a SA (2.995” mag box) and one on a Defiance XM (3.2” mag box)
Mitch Kendall opened up his ejection port on his SA to aid with the issue.
I did a seating depth test with the 175gr Bergers and started at 2.240, 2.260,2.280,2.300,2.320” all with the same powder charge.
2.240” and 2.320” grouped the best, so if I use the 2.240” no issues with the 175gr Berger Elite Hunters fitting in the mag box and ejecting fine.

You just have to work with what you have that’s all, but yes if you don’t want any restrictions with OAL a longer mag box is needed, a Tikka donor would be ideal for this cartridge.

How much extra length are you getting out of the mag box after the modification, I'm interested, I have a 284 micro and I'm contemplating the same thing. I prefer the short action as well, it makes a handy quick handling deer rifle.

I dont want to be restricted! :D

This will be an F Class rig so seating long is important to avoid the donut headaches etc etc.

Sounds like a medium action would be perfect but it limits the options quite a lot. Pardon my ignorance but is the Tikka you mention a medium / XM action?

Would a long action be a good fit? Or is a long action too long and could cause hassle in some other way (I have never owned or shot a long action)?

Tikka T3 T3X actions are all the same lenght ! Std lenght ! Mag box lenght can handle 3.330 and still feed !
99 % of F Ckass open rifles are built on custom single shot actions . Not on repeater actions .
Long action is BEST in MHO . RJ

I have just the perfect action for your F-Class build see add below.

I’ve built a cpl 6.5 PRC’s on Tikka actions and a Sako A7 7mm both have 3.4” mag box so it should feed fine as it did for me.
With that being said an actual magnum long action (ie-Rem 700) which has a 3.7” mag box may be quirky with feeding on the 6.5 PRC case length.
If your using it as a single shot LA would be fine

Close to 1/8”. I ground out the inner support piece at the front of the magazine.
This cuts the magazine capacity down to three rounds. Unless you put the first round in as a 2.80”. I usually put a factory loaded Winchester 284 in the box mag, then three of my longer hand-loads.
Or just use three hand-loads in the magazine.

Thats pretty good, my rifle is the micro series, so only 3 in the mag box. It might cut my capacity down to 2. I'll look into it a little more. I been using sierra game king 140 and 150 gr bullets lately, they have the right shape for the short mag box being a little shorter in length. The 150's shoot very well in my rifle. Thanks for the response, cheers Pete.

No, mine is still in the safe. - dan
Thanks. This fellow on Gun-Post is selling a Remington Model 600 in 284 Winchester. I think his price is way too high, the condition of the rifle looks okay, but definitely is not perfect. Stock has been sanded, the checkering is mostly all gone. It would appear that his description of the stock being beautiful wood and my description are a little off.......:) LOL For someone wanting to try a 284, it might be a good start. But not at his $1160.00 asking price. I would not pay more than $750.00 for his rendition of a 284 Winchester.

Brianhickey is his moniker.

One will have to copy and paste and type in the words Gun-Post, with no hyphen!.....:) All lower case as well.

It would appear Gunnutz seems to be threatened by Gun-Post. This is ridiculous in a supposed free world. LOL
