Here are a couple pics from a groundhoggin' contest some buddies of mine used to run years back. It was a 1 day event that comprised a number of teams and the team to return with the most hogs at days end were the champs. Afterward a tailgate supper and beerfest was held. Unfortunately the event is no longer held but it was fun while it lasted. These are photos from the 2 years I attended and there were 468 and 435 hogs taken on these 2 hunts.Just click on images to enlarge.

"...are they basically junk?..." Ground hog hair is thin with relative thin hides. They're one of the few animals that actually hibernate. They'll also go under ground in extreme heat and rain. Mind you, a second day of rain will bring them out to feed. They are edible though. They eat the same stuff cows eat and they're cleaner.

Sweet! Can't wait. I'd like to save them pics for another forum If you don't mind. Them guys think they did well if they get 5 or 6. We shoot 50 and think we could have done better:D
Next time you boys run that contest I'd like to know;)

Oh btw. Hawg hair is very tuff and water resistant making it a fine hair for dry flys. I've tied some excellent high floating Caddis ties with it. The back skin was used by the oldtimes to make boot laces. Some people eat 'em. I aint one of them.

When I was a kid out hunting with my friends and our 22s, groundhog was our big game. We would clean them, cut them into pieces and cook them over an open fire on the end of a green branch. This was in suburban Ottawa/Orleans back in the 70's. Before long, every field around our house was developed and even carrying a pellet gun got you a visit from the Ontario Provincial Police. They call it progress...

If this was the one from Huron county my cousin and i participated for 4 or 5 years,it was a fun day to say the least but i think the cheating began after a couple of years running, some of those hogs had to have been freezer burnt if you know what i mean, but it was still a fun day to get out and shoot some hogs with some friendly competition
