Buy it for life- bolt action rifle

I think I’ll go for a good condition of a solid older rifle.
That is a sound decision if you find one that has been cared for. Rifles are durable goods that last generations if you have a good one and care for it.

FWIW, I have a Swede M38 carbine that the receiver was manufactured in 1899. It still shoots fine and is a favourite to take out on a bush walk.

Same here. Mine has a turned down and clearanced bolt handle, and drilled and tapped for scope. Further sporterized the stock and glass bedded the barrel.

Bought it when I was 14, and probably the last one I'd sell. 125 years old and probably still be hunting for another 100 years! Good shooter still.

Agree. My m96 sporter in 6.5x55 is what I grab 90% of the time I go out.

I’m wanting to buy my first wood stock bolt action hunting rifle (likely in 308 calibre). Wanting to get something built to last the test of time.

Are the newer guns that are in my price range of used below $1,200 worth getting ; browning hunter/browning x) or should I stick to a classic that is older- that was probably built to a better quality, as old is gold.

I wouldn't have doubts on a Tikka T3 series, a Winchester 70 series or a Ruger 77 series going the long haul.

A Browning Safari Hi Power (FN Mauser) or FN sporter is within your price range too, or can be.

Buy a used Tilkka

If you've got the cash, a tikka arctic might be the play. The intention of the original gov tender and Tikka's design was for a long-serving rifle to replace the old-@$$ Enfields in service with the Rangers. Given how cheap the gov is, I'm sure they expect them to last 60 years before they replace the lot of them haha.

This past summer one of the auction houses had a number of sales and featured well over 100 n.i.b. firearms spread over the summer which sold for 2/3 retail price on many of them. A dealer closed its doors and sent their inventory to Ontario for liquidation. If you are in the right place at the right time you can find yourself a deal.
Good luck
Don

Brno would be my first choice, there is also lots of really nice Husqvarna 1640 or 1900,
I would consider the old brownings, sako, interarms, withworth etc etc

Prairie Gun Traders have Howas for 700. It’s a steal for the action alone. Down the road it’s 500 for Bell and Carlson stock and $800 for Canadian made prefit barrel.

Imagine not knowing there are better lifetime wood and blue rifles than tikka t3's

I like them, but cmon guys. They are working rifles that are better off stainless and plastic fantastic

If I just had to have a new production, reasonably priced wood blue rifle in 308 (yawn on all counts) I'd grab a Hawkeye. I'd rather spend the money on the used market though
