Hunting with a Pistol?

Can't be done in CANADA,(but it isLOL)
If your provincial hunting regs don't prohibit it you could hunt with an antique handgun. Most provinces either ban handgun hunting out right or have caliber restrictions which would knock out many antiques. However if the province did not prohibit either you could legally hunt with an antique handgun.

Well, make sure one eye is open. Anti gun groups are working hard while you're sleeping...
I'm sure we could stop insane politicians and special interest groups wanting to take our rights away and we can enjoy our sport and be proud of it in the future.
It's not a dream. It's a hard uphill battle but don't give up.

I used to shoot during the weekday mornings at Ridgedale out here in the Vancouver lower mainland. I was usually alone and it was very quiet. I have seen deer, black bears, coyotes, etc move across the range while shooting or setting up. Never attempted to engage any of the local wildlife. I consider the range a kind of DMZ WRT wildlife.

When we were able to hunt using a handgun, many years ago in Ontario, we had some $hit-for-brains, "Pushing the envelope", wear them into a local pub near the hunting grounds.
The right/privlege whatever was cancelled the following year.

Kind of ironic considering Ontario seems to have some of the most rectictive regs in the country, but you can hunt small game in Ontatio with an air pistol under 500 fps muzzle velocity. I recently picked up a 22 cal / 420fps pellet pistol to use on grouse during moose season (usually at 20' or so). I'm sure this isn't exactly what you were thinking of, but better than nothing at all.
Aside from the forbidden Restricted angle, I don't know how effective using a pistol other than a .22LR (for rabbits, etc.) would be.
Lots of people in the US use large caliber revolvers but don't hear too much about using pistols. I know people in the US carry pistols with them for preditor defense and such when hunting.

I have also used air pistol (Diana 5G) for grouse but I didn't find it effective. Not even in very close range unless used for a finishing shot to the head. 
That little pellet just doesn't have the power. There is no point wounding and chasing a bird.
Obviously, a .22LR pistol would be different for grouse.
And for bigger game...

I'd love to try it. The guns you'd be using are not the types that the young hoods want to pack, so why not?

In the days when it was banned, a big gun was a 38SW, and the 44 Mag was still very new. The 38Sw was never a serious hunting cartridge, so there wasn't much noise when they outlawed handguns for hunting.

Was that a 22 cal or .177 pellet pistol ? The 22 cal pellets are heavier than the .177's, so driven at similar speeds they pack more of a punch. I'm not sure if its enough more or not. I'm not interested in wounding or wasting game either, any additional info on what you were using would be useful, muzzle velocity, pellet size/weight/shape etc (if you have that info). I'm not dead set on using the pistol this year, but would like a better option than attempting 20' head shots with a rifle zero'd at 200yds and throwing bullets that weigh more than the bird.

a lot of people hunt feral hogs w/ handguns down south.. each state has caliber minimums iirc.. such as 41 magnum for ex.

The Diana 5G is a .177 air pistol with approx. 470 ft/s speed. It's got fully adjustable rear sight and trigger. Accurate and excellent quality target pistol but I don't use it for hunting anymore (still deadly on the shed mouse ). Instead, I bought a Diana 34 air rifle in .22 cal which has plenty of power for small game.
