PIO sensitive to different shooting positions

It is possible for different loads to be more PIO sensitive to different shooting positions (off the bags, just front bag, shooting sticks, etc).

I have a fairly good load for my 338 but I seem to have a 2-3 inch shift in PIO between the bags and my shooting sticks. Sometimes I get flyers I think due to the way I'm holding it on the bag.

I hear from the guys at the range that it is not uncommon and for hunting, i should sight in on the way i shoot in the field.

However, should i play with different combinations to try to minimize any variance or is that just the way it is.

FYI- 71.5 g IMR4350. 225 g accubond and getting close to 2900 on a warm day.

Does this make any sense or am I out in left?

No, you are on the correct course, when you sight your rifle over the bags be sure to hold the forearm with your hand between the stock and the bags, it also pays to have only light contact between the heel of the stock and the rear bag.
When you shoot from any position be sure to hold the stock in the same place from then on, and do not allow your rifle forearm to directly contact your shooting sticks.
Unless of course you shoot from a supported position in the field at all times, in which case......ignore me !
 
If your barrel is clearly free floated, what you rest your stock upon is of no consequence. If it changes your hold so that your eye to scope position changes then you may have an issue. Always try to find your natural point of aim first. your scope may be poor.
 
"...Sometimes I get flyers..." That's not unusual. A slight change in how you fire the shot, how the rifle sits on the rest, an angle change on the sticks, the pain of shooting a big heavy cartridge, etc, etc. Shooting off a solid rest then going to sticks that aren't as solid can and will cause a change of POI too. So will sighting in off a bench, then shooting prone or any other position.
Are the sticks home made or commercial? A bit of leather or thick cloth on the sticks will help. Wood on wood can cause the POI to change too.
Sight the rifle in of a solid rest so you know the rifle will shoot the load well, then, as you've seen, check the sighting off your sticks. Practice with your sticks and the load you intend hunting with too.
 
POI Change

It sounds like the POI can change pending the way / position I shoot and that is what I've been experiencing. What I will try to do is hold my gun like J. stuart mentioned and see what happens.

From savage fan , "If it changes your hold so that your eye to scope position changes then you may have an issue". This could be my issue. When I get set up on the bags, since I'm tall, I crunch down and with my muffs etc I'm usually far back from the scope and I see the dark ring around the outside of the optics. I have an older leupold VarII 3-9x44. Will this change my POI a few inches???

Yes it will, you may have to change the way your scope is set up so that the picture is more consistent, I personally have my scopes set back a bit so that I do not have to crawl the stock.
