What twist is your rifle? if you have to use a .223 i would use the heaviest bullet your rifle can stabilize imo
Here in quebec, for big game, the regs says any centerfire of .243 diameter or greater
A funny thing is that it's forbiden to hunt deer with a 22-250, but it is very legal to hunt moose with 38 special(for example, fired from a .357 mag leveraction marlin)
"...in Ontario we have certain restrictions..." In Ontario, any centre fire is legal for deer. There are counties and townships that don't allow greater than .275 and .270(by the cartridge name), respectively, though.
If you use a .22 calibre rifle, make sure you have a suitable bullet. Varmint bullets used in most factory .223 ammo are not suitable for deer sized game.
