Thinking about building a CZ 457. Most likely would but it in a WOOX Furiosa chassis. Just for my own shooting at a range, not competing (or no plans too). Range has lots of distance options so no constraints there (all the way out to 1000, will save that for a future 6.5 Creedmoor lol). Looking for good accuracy and potentially longer distances. I could try their MTR barreled action (assuming I can find one) or buy the cheapest version of a 457 and just use the action with an aftermarket barrel (Lilja or maybe something else). It seems that some (maybe even most) have good result with the OEM MTR. Looking for thoughts. Will put some Area 419 stuff on it and probably an Arken EP5 or Zeiss S3.

If you can find an 'Un-used' B-Action that would be best bu they are thin on the ground. I'd suggest you buy the VMTR to see how it does b4 you go for a chassis. And I'd put the money into a Really good scope. I have an Athlon 8-34x56 FFP IR MOA that does OK but you might want even more mag ? My VMTR gets 0.3-5xx at 50 and 'sub-moa' at 100, but my 100-yd Challenge the same day as this 'practice' target averaged 1.456" ☹️ with a 10k wind crossing R-to-L and 14*.
And you might get a better barrel than mine :D

Hmm, here's how I'd put it:

Unlimited budget? Custom barrel custom fit and solidly attached to the action without the grub screw system. A gunsmith will be needed to do the barrel work at a minimum. This is where you get the best results out of the platform with the most consistency build-to-build.

Drop-in aftermarket barrels can do very well, though there's a drop in build-to-build consistency, sometimes there's issues with them. Lilja addresses the headspace issue by cutting a longer tenon and including a shim kit, so you have to have an accurate way of measuring your action to get it setup properly. Other barrel makers offering drop-in barrels just cut a standard length tenon that may or may not headspace properly on your individual action. A gunsmith would be needed if you end up on the wrong side of tolerances with loose headspace to setback the barrel shoulder and correct the issue. Chances are the fit won't be that out of whack, but it can happen. Something to be aware of.

I don't have experience with the MTR so I'll leave that to others to comment on, seeing the above target you can judge for yourself if that level of accuracy with SK ammo meets your needs. A custom barrel will do better on average, but not drastically better. Ammo quality is important, you'll have to test to find ammo capable of sub 1" averages on that 100 yard challenge target. Buck says 0.3-0.5xx" groups at 50 yards with his MTR, a full custom should do mostly 0.2-0.3xx" groups. Up to you to decide if it's worth the money.

Tesro has the MTR with a 16" barrel, I would consider picking one up and playing with it and see what you want to upgrade. Though, I would check to see if the 16" would fit with the Woox. I have the MTR with the 20" barrel and it is pretty accurate, stock is perfect for me at the bench, and a new spring makes the trigger really nice.

I have an EP5... it is good bang for the buck, but would not get another. Much prefer the glass in my Match Pro ED. The hash marks on the Arken elevation dial also don't line up great.

Thanks, have noticed others using a Match Pro ED, will have to check that out. Agree the 16” would probably be a bit short.

Recently went through a similar exercise. For reference I have a bunch of Tikkas but wanted to try and branch out a bit for my 22 bolt so was heavily leaning CZ457. After shooting the 457, T1X, and some more, and chatting with the owners, I ended up with a Bergara B14R in my safe.

I already have a semi 22lr so I was looking for something to help further my precision bolt technique. The B14R is heavy and designed to feel like a full sized bolt action. Not only did this emulate my larger calibre rifles better, but I actually prefer the weight of it and it sure does shoot well! The other nice feature is that it uses a Remington 700 footprint, so plenty of aftermarket. The trigger is adjusted to about 2.5 lbs right now which feels pretty nice, although at some point I will drop in a TT two stage...

I have an MTR with a cheap Vortex Diamondback tactical, Area 419 rail, and it shoots pretty nice. I bought mine when they were literally half the price of what they are now. Below targets are SK long range at 50m, 20” barrel version completely stock. I have not pushed it past 100m yet.

I'll add my most recent results for reference. I started with the cheapest version and have been upgrading as funds allow.

This is a 20" factory barrel from the Synthetic stock, in a KRG bravo with a compensator and a 3-9 ZeroTech thrive and at 100yards.

Smallest group is 1.2". A average is close to 1.5". I'm not very experienced.

I would check out the new DNT optics 7=35x56 in that price range. I believe that is a Canadian release of the new Arken, but I would want to play with it before dropping the money.

Forgive my ignorance but what do you mean by unused B-Action? I am unfamiliar with that. Tired Googling some things but figured I might as well ask.

Talking about various MTR barrels, B-action referring to "New' rather than 'Used' 'Barreled-action'. Just lazy, nothing esoteric . . . 😄

lol, ah barrelled action, stupid me, should have clued. into that because I have been inquiring about them. See them listed in a few places but not much available like you say.

I second on the DNT 7-35 scope, consider it's an enhanced version of Arken EP5 Gen 2 7-35 scope by a different product team still from the same factory.
One thing I noticed on Arken reticle is it only has 0.5mil hair on its horizontal line close to the center, most scope has 0.2mil

I have the 16” MTR in the MDT XRS.
Frankly, its amazing.
It shoots better than anyone can shoot it with an mdt rail and rings and an Arken 6-24x50 on it.
With good ammo of course.
My 16” is a fair bit faster than three of my friends who all have 20” barrels on theirs (one is a standard Canadian edition the other two MTR).
Mine shoots better at 50 than all three.

Also, Mine is 60-100fps faster.
Cud be a good thing or a bad thing.
Some of the match ammo i have shot is supersonic tho.
