Picked up an 1899 savage 250/3000 take down not long ago. With a little research, DOM appears to be 1915. It’s in very nice shape and functions/ shoots flawlessly.
It is obvious that it had a peep sight on it originally, that unfortunately was removed at some point in its life, and My question is……which peep sight do I need to bring the rifle back to its original state????
Have been researching this and the info varies. I think I may have it narrowed down to either a Lyman 29 1/2 or 30 1/2 peep sight.
What say you?? Am I on the right track??

Those 2 are earliest, later Lyman 1a or 2a or Marbles S1. There is a Lyman 56s new with box for sale on a Canadian site, pushing $400 but far superior to the tang mounted sights. Not in the way of your hand and micrometer adjustments. Plus the 56s uses same existing holes as the tang sight. No need to mutilate a collectible rifle. Hope this helps.

To match up to the front sight, would I not have to go with the 2 early versions.
My goal is to return it to the way it was originally.

What would be period correct? The sight could have been put on at anytime since it was built , not just the year it was made.
A few companies made sights for the 99. One of mine carries a Weaver. Part of the problem is we haven’t a clue what sight was on it.

This is the sight you need.
Lyman tang sight- marked SA on the underside.
You will also need the filler blank to keep it original/authentic .

Very true. I’m also going by a visible mark in the finish on the wrist (fading in finish) were the peep sight has overlapped the wood directly behind the tang.
I’m guessing that whatever sight was mounted had been there for quite some time .
Would be nice to find a sight that would cover this very obvious mark.

That looks like what I might be after. The appearance of that site looks like it would cover the marks left from the original.
Filler blank??? Referring to the dove tail blank??

Here is what is on my 1905 dated one.

no visible markings on it that I can see.
It also has the barrel mounted sight.

This one was purchased by my great grandfather in 1905 and as far as we know it is original to the rifle...but who knows.

Yes,
The dove tail where the rear barrel sight attaches.
Usually if they came from the factory with the optional tang sight a blank was installed in place of the rear sight.
Yes. Will definitely need that. Someone has put a folding sight into that dove tail. It looks terrible from being bubba’d to work with the original front sight.

Judging by your pics, that sight would match the marks on my rifles wrist and tang.
Does your rifle have a dove tail sight as well or a filler blank??

Many 99s and Winchester rifles were ordered with tang peeps plus a folding two leaf sight on the barrel like the long discontinued Lyman no.6 enabling the used of either.
