So I have a bunch of those bullets, I will go try them at the range today( my rifle seems to be picky on bullet length) anyway, I was wondering if that bullet would do well on wolfs and coyotes at let’s say up to 300m ?
Speed should be over 3000fps!!
Thanks

coyote no problem, wolf, would be a little on the light side. They are tuff critters. shot placement would be less forgiving on a wolf.

40NBT in a 222 should be in the 3400 fps range. It'll work on coyotes, probably best to keep shots in the 300 yard range or closer. It's on the lighter end for wolf, especially if shot angles aren't broadside

Ok thanks, I average 3345fps on 15 shots!
That rifle doesn’t like long bullets so is there a short bullet that would be good for wolf? Or does it have to be a certain weight like let say over 55gn?

Used the 40 bt in 223 for few yr on yotes and had some that would be down then get back up after being shot. This was under 200y. So I went with a hornady 50 sx bullet and these have been more fur friendly

I never shot anything that lite in my 222 mostly 50gr SP or 52gr HPBT right around 3200 fps, dynamite on gophers and on coyotes when I was calling, never shot a yote over 200 yards but it did the trick very nicely, wolves are a different story as they are a lot bigger and tougher the 222 will knock them down but I would go with a less fragile 55gr bullet or even a monolithic

My rifle doesn’t like anything over .690” so everything over 50gn is not working for her!
Maybe I need a bigger round, there is a nice 257 bob ai on the ee, that would do the trick real well I bet!

"there is a nice 257 bob ai on the ee" That's the direction i would be going if wolf was on the hit list. 222 is a little light for that task.

I checked out that 257 Roberts Ackley Improved, what a beautiful rifle. Almost too nice to be moving from predator stand to predator stand.

In saying that, if you are a person who takes great care of your firearms, go for it! She's a real beauty indeed.

A 223 Remington with 55 grain or 60 grain bullets will also dispatch wolves quite nicely. In saying that, a trapper friend of mine shoots them at close range with a 22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire 30 grain Hornady V-Max round. And a 22 Hornet centerfire.

Of course these shots are all close to 20 yards.
