Flip caps

They can move on heavy recoiling rifles. On those I fold the eye piece all the way forward (flat on top of the scope). This prevents that completely but when I haven’t it isn’t great.
I use them on my 7mmstw, and have used them on my 300RUM, 8mmremmmag, 338x8mmremmag, and 375H&H, none of which are braked. If you use the correct size, they don't move under recoil.

Old school here - Bicycle inner tube split open lengthwise, fitted to overlap the scope dimensions and tied in a snug loop with the desired amount of friction. Protects the glass and parts of the scope/turrets well, easily removable, and lasts for years.

I’m talking about the Leupold alumina cap will fold back towards your eye under recoil. They’re definitely the right size as they only work on the correct size EP/ objective.

I had some of the vortex defenders on a scoped Marlin 30-30 a couple years back and the optic was an older style illuminated scope with the illumination control on the top of the eye piece section of the scope instead of where the more modern style has them opposite the windage dial.

I typically like the caps to flip up and lay flat on the top of the scope but in this case the illumination control was in the way so the cap was not fully flat and locked down..... I start sighting in the gun and notice I'm getting "scoped" right away....? Made no sense given the gun I was shooting and the amount of eye relief on the scope.... bit embarrassing as well but I finally figured out what was happening later. The fact the Defender caps were not locked down meant they were loose enough to flip under even the mild recoil of the 30-30 and I was getting bite by the lens caps flipping towards my eye not the edge of the scope! I've since adjusted the lens cap to fold flat along the side out of the way of the illumination dial.

Lesson learned and I recall Rugby Dave, who was present at the time, thought it was pretty funny that I got scoped and was bleeding from such a low recoil rifle.......... :)
