New gun build

The downside of 223 is the weird, atypical boltface and cartridge shape. Now you need a special bolt, special magazines, special cartridge holder for reloading equipment... Easier to just go with a 308-based .22cal (22 creed, 22 BR, 22 BRA, 22 dasher...).
Assuming he's getting a new action and dies already, with lots of powders at $600/8lbs, you're recovering the cost of new mags and a cartridge holder pretty quick shooting max 25gr of powder vs 40ish... Nevermind that brass is cheap and plentiful.

That is a good point with the 223 bolt face. Also this just gave me an idea, I could get a prefit for my 6.5 action and shoot a .22cal with the 308 bolt face. I’ve never dealt with a prefit before always with a smith is there any disadvantages to them?

Just a little tid bit for the prefit side of things.

I had a smith put a custom rifle put together using a defiance action. The following year I put together a 6.5 CM bench rifle myself using prefit pcs. Cadex action, prefit IBI barrel. Reason I went IBI is because they use an exterior "savage" style nut. I bought the action about 4 months after I had the barrel. No problems at all doing this at home with a go/no go gauge and no barrel vise, action screw required. So no special tools besides an outer nut tool. This still fits in my chassis that I used, so no need to open up a standard stock to fit the nut style barrel that you may or may not need to do. I have over 2300 rounds down this rifle so far, and counting with no issues.

So don't hesitate to get a nice tight "prefit" action and a "prefit" barrel and do this at home. Really if I can do this anyone else can. I don't have any special training, no machining, just a regular gun nut!

For 1000, 22creedmoor/gt, 25creedmoor/gt would do the work easily if you want to have a different Caliber family.
If you want to try a different action, could consider something can do easy barrel swap like AI ATX or Terminus Zeus, so in the future you only need to get a new barrel
If he’s running a defiance action he can get a prefit or a smith to chamber a barrel. Spin it on and go. Just about as easy as it gets

Yeah, either way.
I wasn't sure if he wants a different action or keeps it consistent staying with Defiance (it's getting way too expensive now unless he has the entry model action)
Personally I would like to have something different and have the ability you can swap barrel at range without taking the barrel vise kit.

Then maybe you wait in your Mom's basement, cut off your man-ban, get a real job, and hopefully your nuts will drop......:)

Now do you understand how stupid your comment is?......
You can go from 0 to 1000 so fast, NASA’s considering hiring you as their next rocket! By the time anyone realizes, you’ve already hit hyperspeed, grabbed a snack, and circled back for the encore.

Well then, stop spreading stupid comments that came from over ten years ago.

If you think a 6.5 Creedmoor is for hippies, you could very well be one. My point is this joke isn't even funny considering a 6.5 Creedmoor is the fastest growing caliber in North America right now.

As a retired dealer, I sold ten Creedmoor's to every other caliber. It might be time to grow up!......:)

So now you’ve got the power to read minds…congratulations, you’re officially the human version of Wi-Fi, but with better signal strength!

And btw 22 bleedmoor means the 22 creedmoor is so fast that critters bleed more when they get hit with it…
And so I stand corrected. I apologize for jumping to conclusions.....:(

You are right, I have a short fuse when it comes to people making ridiculous jokes about the very well designed 6.5 Creedmoor.

It would appear, I jumped the gun on this one. (no pun intended). So again I am truly sorry!

It takes a humble man to do so, I accept your apology.

I've built numerous "hot rodded" 22 cals over the years. Something about a 22-250AI is just awesome, mine shoots incredible, I run a 26" 7.5 twist with 90gr SMK's, H1000 at 3150FPS (0 pressure signs, could probably push little harder but meh) into tiny holes, its a laser out to 500 yards. The 22 creed and 250 AI are almost the same ballistically. Creedmoor might yield you a few extra FPS. The 22-284 is insane as well but don't get me started on barrel life. I push my 75gr Bergers at 3750fps from it, 28" 7 twist barrel with H1000 is money. But from the list below, I don't think you can go wrong with any of them.

223 AI
22 BR
22 BRA
22 Dasher
22-250 AI
22 Creed
22x47 Lapua
22 XC
22 GT
22-243
22-243 AI

The list goes on. For me it comes down brass availability and quality, I run only Lapua brass. If I can't get Lapua brass, I wont build it. Just personal preference. Obviously some listed will feed better from a mag than others BUT a good smith should be able to tweak the mag so it feeds flawless as long as your action has a nice feed ramp. My 6BR feeds just fine from the MDT BR mags. I run a KS SAR3 Lug. But lots of said they had feeding issues with the BR in other actions.

Let us know what you decide! Welcome to the rabbit hole of speedy small bores, once you go down, its hard to get out haha
