what would be an ultimate set up

I ordered one Russky SKS through frontier' and I am thinking about replacing stock with something more modern, like ATI dragunov or folder. Which one of stocks is the best fit and provides better accuracy? What glass works good for SKS. I heard receiver cover scope mounts are not solid enough - is it true? Also I would appreciate recommendations on slings, bipods and whatever you think is important. My first SKS, so I would appreciate any advice.

Keep it stock and just shoot the thing as it is. Buy ammo.

Whatever you do to a SKS, Its just a SKS, Gonna shoot the same done up as it would stock.

About the only thing I'd change would be the stock, unless it was an all matching Vietnam era Chinese or Russian SKS, then I wouldn't do a thing to it.

I personally found the ATI folder more enjoyable then the dragunov stock, as the drag' one makes removing the receiver cover for cleaning a chore, and overall the stock makes this handy carbine too heavy IMHO.

If I had to do it again I'd keep it simple and go with custom painting myself a Monti Carlo style stock.

As for scopes, go with a scout, or better yet a Kalinka optics side mount style.
Yes receiver cover ones can be problematic.
I've had 3 come through my house and they all sucked.

Same goes with Metal aftermarket mags...all garbage IMHO.

If you want an SKS with detachable AK mags, scrounge up an SKS D.

I bought a Ramline stock off of Ardent who is on this board. I believe he has another monte Carlo stock on hand. The reason why I went with a monte Carlo stock was for fit. The originals wood stock is pretty short. The Ramline fit very snug and just snapped in. I find I can achieve better accuracy now that the stock fits me better. Gun just put 5 rds inside 2" at 50 yards so I am getting the results I was looking for.

Neither the folder or the Drug stock did anything for me. The folder looks cool but just is not as stable as the Monte Carlo design IMHO.

Guess it depends on what you are trying to achieve, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.

Take Care

Bob

I was thinking of picking up the Tasco T6 which isn't readily available in Canada, so probably looking at spending $100 to bring one up from the States.

As for the scope mount, any opinions on the one from Scout Scopes? It replaces the rear iron sight. Unfortuatly they don't ship to Canada, so we're forced to pay double for the mount from marstar.

And for the optics, I'm just gonna start with cheapy red dot scope from ebay. Should run me about $20.

This is my ultimate SKS, now the question, should I do this to a Russian, or pick up a Chinese one as well.

Buy a Norinco if you wanna mod. Leave the Rusky stock, it has history. Get a SKS-D and mod the hell out of it. I got a 75rd drum (pinned) and an ak74 muzzle brake on mine.

i was glad to heard your mod is not permenent , just dont sell or throw the russian stock away cos you may want to return it back to its original form (especially if its matching) .

members have to realize , the attitude towards russian should not be the same as with late model norinco, why? cos people do collect them , yes, people also buy to shoot them but not to "shoot the hell out of them" that you hear so often with norinco .

they dont make russian SKS anymore, none been made for over 50 years so yes, you will be getting a piece of history.

welcome to the SKS club. enjoy.:D

I have the ScoutScopes mount on my Norc. Works very well.

Is there any manufacturer out there who has a butt spacer for the Chinese SKS? I prefer the SKS stock, but would like to lengthen the butt a little more.

google, sks rubber pad

They are less then $10.00 and add an inch of length.

I got one from the E.E. a few years ago and it really improved the feel of the stock!

yes, i like those. cheap enuff for me to buy one for every SKS.

ebay has tons of those but unfortunately trying to get them to ship it up north is the tricky part.

The rubber pads are okay, but I would like to keep the original metal plate, with a plastic spacer between the wood and the plate to lengthen the pull. Google is a friend indeed.:)
