Remmy 673 guide gun
I have been thinking about getting one in 6.5 rem mag. Any body have any experience with the rifle or the cal .
Was thinking of taking off the rib and trying to fit a model 7 stock on making it a light pack gun.
I have a 600 in 308 but the two are pretty different.

Brass is tough to find...powder capacity really would perform better with a 24" + barrel ...same volocities as the 264 Win Mag. As a guide gun....I'd want a larger bullet diameter. The .264 bullet is known for its great SD and penetration capabilities...but like said before the 264 Win Mag or 6.5 Rem Mag are not going to do any better inside of 200 yards than the lighter recoiling...more efficent 260 Rem or 6.5x55 Swede. This 673 just doesn't fit the bill for many in any cal. other than the 350 Rem Mag and even at that...stock options and scope mounting options are limited. For quick action in close I opted for the Rem 7600 carbine in 35 Whelen and it does every thing a 673 could do and then some.

What will it do at 200 yards that the 260 Remington won't ???

Nothing, but it will push a 140gr 200fps faster and that will make a difference at 400yds+.
I personally like the cartridge. It`s like having a .270 in a short action, and that has mountain rifle written all over it. The platform they brought it back on leaves a lot to be desired.

I agree that the cartridge in it's self has excellent potential in say a 24" medium sportster barrel in a full sized m700 s/a. It would make a very nice CDL S/S or even a LSS...but in a short ribbed barrel with iron sites intended for shorter range applications....ah not so much!

I don't care for the rifle much, but I like the cartridge. In an action (say a Ruger) that allows you to seat the bullet out to a decent length, you end up with basically the case capacity of the 6.5-06 AI, and that's not a bad place to be. It won't do anything the 270 won't do on game, but the 6.5 bullets are slightly better ballistically speaking. One of the first short magnums, and still doing the job well 40 some years later. - dan

What about a 6.5 Rem Mag in a Model 700? I had a look at one that is in decent condition and was considering picking it up. Can you seat the bullets out farther in the 700 or are they pretty much the same as the 600? I am not that familiar with Remy's.

I have two a 660 with a 20" barrel which performs like a pocket 270 and a 22" Ruger Flatbolt which is a real great all-round rifle.

The 6.5 Rem Mag gets about 150 ft/sec more than a 260 Rem in a similar barrel length and is a very accurate and hard hitting caliber. (I sold my 260 after getting my first 6.5Rem Mag and testing both cartridges) My 660 has a string of one shot kills on caribou that is fairly astonishing to me. It stands at 18 using the 120 Sierra Spitzer and 125 Nosler Partition. Bang-flops are fairly common. The extra speed really increases bullet performance of this caliber.

The Ruger has performed a 370 yard kill on a caribou using the 129 Hornady Spitzer and loaded with 140 grain Nosler Partitions at 2900ft/sec is quite the all round rig. I have taken it moose hunting though I prefer my 358 Norma.

Yes the 270WSM is a bit more of a good thing but if the 6.5 is over bore in a short rifle length barrel what about the 270 and 7mm WSM's? Remingtons two original short magnums along with the 284 where ahead of their time and I own the 6.5's a 284 in a Savage 99 and a 350 Rem Mag in a 660. Great rigs all.

I have over a thousand rounds of 6.5 Rem Mag factory ammo bought in Northern Stores across Nunavut where it had been ordered many years ago and never bought. Got most of it for 5.00 a box! Keep your eyes open in the back water towns and you never know.

As to seating depth.... the Remingtons both 700 and 600's get you to 2.825 OAL. The Ruger to 2.900. The old worry about seating bullets deep is a bunch of nonsense IMO. A 264 bullet takes very little powder space even when seated past the shoulder and displaces only a couple of grains of powder. Might amount to 25-40ft/sec drop at most with 140 grain bullets.
