243 or 22-250

I own all of these .223 cheapest and good barrel life 22-250 shorter barrel life not really a plinker better for straight coyote hunting
,243 will do everything but not great on yotes more recoil .My favorite varmint and yote cal is the 204 ruger flat as the 22-250 low recoil and cheap to reload but not buy loaded rounds for .

Thread drift- it's real! LOL
Choosing between the two I would choose the 22/250. But neither would be my choice because of the distances I kill 'yotes at🙂
Cat
what's his name wilson 1 7/8 inch group at 1000yds doesn't get much better than that
i use a 223 and a 243
occasionally i get one at 400-500 yds with the 243 but mostly i just educate them

I'd pick the .243. Drives the slightly heavier, higher BC bullets better.

Not that you can't get longer, higher BC bullets for the 22-250, but then you aren't getting the blazing speed most people are thinking of with it. And most 22-250 rifles aren't sold with a fast enough twist to use them anyway. Unless things have changed.

The .243 just out 22-250s the 22-250, and as a bonus it's a lot easier pressing that into service as a light big game rifle. Even if you don't live where there is bullet diameter restrictions for big game.

Tikka makes some fast twist 22-250s, but they're hard to get your hands on.

Western ON? Only yotes? 22-250 is an unreal cartridge, I would sight for 200, anything under 300 put it on fur and yote down.

223 has more barrel life if u wana plink w it also.

243 if you wana shoot a wolf with it also. lol

I just went though this myself. I picked 22-250, flat shooting, very little recoil and I can spot my shots. I have enough other calibers to deal with big game better than any 243 loads. I only coyote hunt with the 22-250, I also have a 204 R to save fur if needed. I rarely blast away at the range with any of my guns so not worried about barrel life. Once this 22-250 is shot out, I'm thinking it will get an ackley improved 8 twist spun on. So if you have bigger calibers in your arsenal, skip the 243 that's not great for close range coyotes, its also not great for big game and get the 22-250. If you need another rifle for the smaller sized big game and basically only good at long range coyote hunting get the 243.

handloading the 22-250 is really where you can get some results
You should see what a 243 can do when it is hand loaded.

as usual a question specific to a topic is taken over with answers that have nothing to do with the question
243 would be a better calibre on all levels 55 gr bullets up to 100 gr if wanting to really get into taking yotes out to 400-600 yds

I've had both a 22-250 and a 243. I did a lot more with the 243. Its a hell of a cartridge if you ignore the haters.

My favourite yote medicine was a 243 pushing a 70gr Ballistic Tip at something like 3600+ fps. That bullet kills like Thor's Hammer. I've never seen anything kill coyotes like that. The 70gr BT has a high enough BC that it can reach out to some serious distance, yet the poly tip and thin jacket causes the bullet to explode on impact. Its just devastating on varmints.

I shot my 243 at gophers at 100 yds and I also took it all the way out to 2000 yds. Not too many cartridges can cover that sort of range of effectiveness.

For fox I started with a slow twist 223, then a 1/14 22-250 which was better, then switched to 1/8 223 which was better at range with 69 - 75gr than the 250. After that a 243 for two years which was fantastic. Then a 22-250 fast twist 1/8 which is incredible with 75ELDM. Looking back the 1/8 223 is possibly the most fun, 243 with 80-87gr maybe the best for serious foxing out to over 500m. At the moment I still have 1/8 223, 1/8 22-250 and a normal remmy 243 for fox. Would not want a slow twist 223 or slow twist 22-250 anymore.

The problem is with the 22-250 it’s NEARLY impossible to buy a factory rifle with anything but a 1-14 for Some STUPID reason ! 223 s mostly all come with a 1-8 or 1-9 now . RJ
