Rational Alberta Hunters

Duffy,

You do more disservice to Alberta hunters and our collectively owned wildlife resource than you know.

I think it is time to practice what you preach - take a rational approach.

This pilot may very well have had great intentions, but it's focus changed form a habitat and access driven plan to an economic venue to commercialize wildlife. This was stated explicitly in the meeting that we had in Lethbridge with Cormack Gates (facilitator) and SRD.
We have done the research Duffy, and we are not opposed to habitat retention or initiation. We are not opposed to seeing some type of reward to landowners who are stewards.
We sound pretty irrational don't we?

I think the disconnect for you Duffy is that you see the program for the principles contained within the first iteration. By not seeing beyond that, you appear to be wearing rose colored glasses with a substantive set of blinders.

Where do you live Duffy?
I live very close to both of the proposed pilot areas.

Do you have local knowledge of the Landscape, the Players and the issues?
I do. If you do not have that knowledge, you probably should not speak to the virtues of this pilot, because you lack the complete information package - go ahead and form your opinion, but please do not speak to this issue as an expert.

Hopefully the "rational" reader will realize the unified and increasing awareness and opposition to Open Spaces for what it is, an attempt to commercialize wildlife (Cormack Gates's words not mine).

I give my hunting Brethren the credit they deserve to make these observations in a rational manner. I wish that you could do the same.

I have seen similar behavior to your less than insightful diatribes, and couldn't quite place it. I do remember it now though. I believe it was a proponent of the Flat Earth Society. I couldn't quite understand how someone could actually believe something like that with all of the evidence to refute it. Thanks to you Duffy I think I have been afforded a glimpse in to this frame of mind.

Based on the article appearing in the Lethbridge Herald, the current form of OS appears to be a thinly disguised attempt by Outfitters to increase their hold on hunting opportunities in AB.

Ding Ding Ding!!!! You are correct sir. From what I understand, It's bad juju.

Some of you non Alberta hunters may be wondering about the other "alberta hunters" thread. You may or may not have noticed that of the 106 posts 52 were made by 4 Alberta guys. and 29 were made by one person in particular.

The Open Spaces program is getting a lot of attention among hunters in Alberta. But there is a segment of :runaway: people who are taking it to a different level :dancingbanana:

They think it is "payed hunting" (what ever that means) and they see red and  will not believe there could be any good from it in any modified form.

Hello SB Duffy,

I would love to here why you believe this will be a good thing for Alberta hunters. Please tell me. I have read your posts on OS and never once have you given information to support your position. Give me some information that you have that could possibly tell me this is a good thing. Please inform me as I must not know what is going on.

The details are not ironed out yet as the pilot projects are still in a planning stage. The "working Group" wants the "players" at the table to finnish it up and then there is to be a 5 year trial. With an evaluation process that would for one thing require a 75% satisfaction of resident hunters. But many of those against it just want it shut down and are not willing to be involved in further planning

You keep saying this "the details are not ironed out yet". If this is in fact the case how on gods green earth can they go ahead with this in 2008.

What players are you talking about? The AFGA, which I do believe is the largest hunting/fishing organization in Alberta, voted against it. The program goes againt the AFGA's second objective which states "Foster and promote the non-commercial harvest of fish and game as a legitimate part of an overall wildlife management program;". I am still not sure why AFGA was even at the table.

My last question to you is:

What is the satisfaction rate of resident hunters right now?

If you could state your side of the discussion and answer my quesions I would appreciate it.

Bubba

Where abouts in NSW are you at? I spend a year in Griffith. Wife was on a teachers exchange and I was a kept man (nice work if you can get it).

Duffy, I am in Hay, about an hour and a half to the west of Griffith, and you are right ...it is good work, it just does not last long enough.

I find it hard to believe you can have a detailed business analysis, and yet tell folks that the details need to be "fleshed"out - see the Alberta Resident Hunters for Justice website to see the business analysis.

I think the question you ask about hunter satisfaction now is a good one Bubba. I doubt SB Duffy will be able to give you an answer, as the group directly responsible is unable to provide any documented data to support these claims. I am also curious as to how they will judge satisfaction of the pilot - from the landowner? Hunters who pay for access? HFH tag holders? General public (I highly doubt). Due diligence has not been shown.

We all know data can be manipulated. Fortunately Alberta's hunters are not such pushovers.

No.

SB stands for secret ballot, which Duffy tried to enact at the AFGA AGM when the resolution to support paid hunting was shot down.

He didn't have the guts to openly hold his hand up in opposition there, it is just easier to lurk around in cyberspace and snipe away. As I said earlier me and two others supported a resolution regarding the 6 point elk, with about 267 opposing us. The funny part with that was I stuck to my guns because I believed in it. I also had to rethink my position after being that far on the other side.

I'm not sure SB Duffy is that rational.

J Stuart, How ya going!
I was through Hay a number of times. Went to the Shearering demo at the Shearing museum place. I heard there was some good pig hunting around hay but never got on any. Did get out for a rabbit shoot one
night.

Sounds more like you SB Duffy. I simply stated my thoughts on OS and asked for yours. Can you give me your thoughts on OS or not. If not quit posting on it.

Actually Bubba I thought I had "quit posting on it"

You have made it clear you are set in your viewpoint and are not willing to listen to any other views. And some have just stooped to being insulting and not posting anything constructive. I have been trying to ignore you guys posting on it. I'll try harder.

If you have quit posting on it why do you keep starting threads. The first post of this thread was about OS. If you want to discuss its merits and pitfalls lets do it. Again "you have not once stated what you think the merits of the program are."

Duffy, the drought has dwindled the pig numbers around here, although I have shot 12 over the last couple of months when at work.

I shore for 13 years so have absolutely no interest in the shearers hall of shame, to the point that I have not even been out for a visit.

So did you get to go to Melbourne and watch a game of kick and giggle ?

Duffy would have picked that particular word use up in Australia, it is commonly used here and is used as either descriptive or derogatory, but is not necessarily used to offend.
Duffy, the Australian word use is catching...isn't it.
James.

Ps, did it take you long to get out of swearing when you got home ?
