Want to find Hot Bluing Chemicals locally

Burmisdog:
Sodium hydroxide is also known as lye. Available at Home Hardware stores (3kg for about $20). Be careful to get PURE sodium hydroxide, Not drain cleaner ( ie: Drano), which is mixed with aluminum.

Hi
I'm not happy with results from cold re-blue, and want to try my hand at hot re-bluing. Recipes call for 65% Sodium Hydroxide, 25% Potassium Nitrate and 10% Sodium Nitrate.
Where can I buy these chemicals in Western Canada region?

thanks

Do yourself a favor and research slow rust bluing. There is a fair amount of information on this site and on Google.

The process is a bit more labor intensive than hot bluing but it can be done at home without setting up an elaborate tank system with boiling hot chemicals.

Slow rust bluing gives a beautiful finish that is as tough as nails. Here's a sample I did recently.

Sodium nitrite is available from butcher supply outlets, make sure it is pure and not mixed with salt as a good to go cure.
