300 savage

The model 8 A I had was in 35 Rem. Very similar to the rifle used by Frank Hamer to kill Bonnie and Clyde. I traded to a fellow CGN'r for an Oberndorf Mauser. It came from the Hamilton Police Dept. and made in 1929. Worked fine and shot like a house on fire. It had the folding rear tang sight and a straight grip stock. JITC

I know it may not have the "pinache" of the old 99 Savage rifles, but I purchased a Remington 700 "Classic" chambered in 300 Savage (2003) when they showed up in stores. I couldn't be more pleased. This rifle gets 2750 with the 150 (Reloder 15) and 2635 with the 165. Accuracy is astounding! Every bit as good as any 308 I have ever used. The 300 Savage is underrated by those not familiar with it, but I would not hesitate to purposely take it after anything in North America except the big bears, and I believe it would do one of those in as well under ideal circumstances. A woman guide was guiding a US hunter for moose, when a grizzly bear stood up fifteen feet in front of them. The lady killed it with one shot, while the hunter stood frozen in his tracks. Her rifle was a 99 Savage, in 300 calibre.
To the several of you on these threads who have read my book, this is the case I tell of, only I didn't say what rifle she had used.

2 years back I dropped a nice 4x5 muley buck at 170+ yards with one shot in the neck, Rifile was a Savage 99 (1943) in .300. Bullet was a 150gr Federal Classic. I sold it soon after to a work mate.

You so and so's are going to have to pack this thread in.....I have found myself looking around for a Savage 99 in 300, which is not a good thing as in this country they are like hens teeth.

Hard gun to find, sure it's a 1943? They didn't make alot of 99's during WWII cause they were busy building Thomas machine guns and Enfields for the war effort.

Stuart, there's lots of 300's out there, I'll p.m. you with the next one I see.

Ah yup, that would explain alot! Guess I won't be finding you one but I do have a buddy in Australia that has a collection of 99's that might let one slip from his grasp or know where you can get one.

Please feel free to pm me for or with details, the Savage 99 is one of the very few firearms that take my fancy.

Must have told you it was a hard year to find back when I gave you the year then to!:D

Funny I didn't jot that one down in my data, it's hard to keep track of the switch dates in the war years. In 1944 alone there were only just over 150 99's made in total.

Mad Dog, is there anywhere you can recommend to look for a used stock? My 99 has a tang crack along both sides of the receiver and I wouldn't mind trying to replace it. If you have any info let me know. Thanks,Mark.

Used stocks or factory stocks are almost impossible to find and usually the ones you do find will have tang cracks up both sides from behind the receiever.

Ebay has them every now and then but expect to pay a premium cause you'll be fighting with the U.S. collectors on them. You could try Western and see if they've got any hanging in the stock room.
