hey gona load up a bit of 45-70 and thought id see who have any good plinker loads figured out. starline brass, 405 gr gas checked lead bullet.

rifle is a browning 1886 carbine

25gr of 5744 or 27gr of H4198 make a good plinking round, comparable to shooting a long Mosin by the felt recoil. Cast bullets without gas check

If you’re able to get your hands on H4895 or Trail Boss it’ll be awesome for that. I’ve only used the Trail Boss reduced loads and they’re like popgun loads in 30-06. Simple instructions from Hodgdon and you basically can’t go wrong.

I'm going to experiment with tightgroup and cast. Should be similar results.

I think tigrr above posted a link to some loads with Titegroup. I don't recall if I tried it or not (been a few years since I owned a 45-70) but let us know how it goes.

I love this load. I introduced this to a friend that wanted to get rid of his 1895 due to recoil. Now it is his go to hunting rifle.

Well, I'm too stupid to be bothered by recoil these days, but for punching holes in paper or a mild "deer out to 125 meters" it fits the bill. I guess I shouldn't have sold my Handi rifle...
