45-70

I’ve run trail boss 12-13gr but that’s not available on this side of the world right now. Still have a sealed 1/2 pound or whatever I might crack for fun.

29 grains IMR-4198 was pleasant. Now that powder is expensive and rare ish.

I have some AA5744 I should try. Was $70/lb and more expensive now.

I dabbled in some Titegroup loads. Someone had website from the 90s with data. I didn’t have a Chrono but recoil felt similar to other trapdoor loads and didn’t feel like climbing my ladder higher.

I was just thinking it’s been a while and I should plink with the 45-70.

I wish vihtavuori published trapdoor and 1895 load data.

13.5 grains of trail boss under a gas checked 405 grain lead bullet is a nice popgun load. i had a can of trailboss so used it. i couldnt find bluedot or unique in any stores close to me

Went out today and did some Tightgroup with Campro 405 gr plated bullets. Starline brass that I annealed first, CCI large rifle primers.

Range was 50 meters. New production Winchester 1885 rifle for testing. I shoot 405 gr remington bullets with IMR4198 out of normally, at 100m it's 1.5" or better usually. I'm the weak link.

I loaded extra at 10gr for sighting purposes, I figured I'd have to raise the rear sight due to lower velocity. I was wrong, had to bring it all the way down to get on paper . All groups are 7 shots, can't remember which reloading manual said that. I've always stuck with it.

I will load more and go to 100m and see how they group. I'm pretty happy with results so far. If they hold under 3 inches at 100m I will be happy. Inexpensive to shoot and quite.

Just about to load up some this weekend was thinking AA 2200 or imr 3031 , anyone have experience with these powders in 45-70 ?

Played around more with Tightgroup and the Campro 405gr bullets. 11gr charge seems to be decent so far. New rifle this time, Pedersoli 1874 Sharp's. 50 m groups are bullets touching again .7" 5 shot group was best. 100m 2.8" 5 shot group. I shot 2 5 shot groups at 100m, other was 3.3".

I can't complain for a ultra cheap load. Two different rifles both touching bullets at 50m, 100m results for me are acceptable.

Chronograph results at 11gr. 955fps and SD of 12.8 out of 32inch barrel.

Be aware that Starline 45-70 brass is quite hard in the neck area and often fail to fully expand in the chamber leaving you with "smoked" cases when used for light loads.

hey gona load up a bit of 45-70 and thought id see who have any good plinker loads figured out. starline brass, 405 gr gas checked lead bullet.

rifle is a browning 1886 carbine
32gr. of IMR 4198, great accuracy and mv is about 1300-1400 fps. Another favourite of mine is Accurate 2015, 38gr. for a mv of 1400 fps also very accurate. Trap door safe.
