I am thinking about trading in one of my .30-06 rifles for a 7mm-08. I've always been interested, just never pulled the trigger on one and don't know anyone that owns one so I would like to hear about your experiences with it. Kills, accuracy, that sort of thing.
I love the .30-06, and I will always have one in the safe, but I would like to switch it up some. I am a fairly experienced reloader, so info on that aspect would be appreciated as well.
Cheers!

I wrestled over picking one up very recently as well. Ultimately I ended up with a 6.5 Grendel, but that 7mm-08 is a very neat caliber. I had a friend growing up who hunted exclusively with it, and he always raved about how good it was. Certainly flattened deer for him, and it didn't have a flinch inducing recoil for him either.

I have been shooting and hunting with a 7/08 for at least a dozen or more years now. I like it a lot. There is very little recoil or muzzle jump, and seldom do I lose sight of the target prior to impact. I’m not a reloader, and only shoot factory ammo. After trying out various loads in my Browning X-Bolt, I long ago settled on shooting Nosler Trophy Grade 140 Accubond. Have shot lots of deer with it…. Vancouver Island Blacktails, along with many Mule deer and Whitetails both here in BC and in Alberta. One shot each and they tip over right there, no need for a follow up shot. Although I have never shot a moose with the 7/08 (I use either my 300 wsm or my 270 wsm for moose) I would certainly feel comfortable tipping a moose over at 300 yards or more with the 7/08. It’s a great all-purpose hunting round that I can easily recommend.

It’s a great cartridge, I’ve been using it for close to 20 years on white tails and an occasional black bear. I don’t notice any difference in killing power between that and my ‘06. If you are a hand loader you are all set, lots of bullet choices!

The 7mm-08 is a heck of a cartridge l, that's for sure.

But my Grendel, which I bought for my son...Is one of my favorite rifles to shoot and load for. Its so nice to sit behind and shoot, and no matter what I put in it, it just plain groups.

And with the 129 accubond long range bullets, it's one hell of a deer killer. Such a tiny cartridge, and it just blasts right through them, with impressive performance. I think the velocity it's shooting them at must be right in the sweet spot for those bullets performance.

If you already have a multiple 30-06's I would definitely look hard at picking up a 7mm-08. Or even getting a 338-06ai barrel slapped on there, and keep utilizing that 30-06 brass. If your a reloader that is.

My son has one and on his first hunt with it last fall he dropped a whitetail buck right in it's tracks.
But it was a chest shot at only 30 yards.
And like others have said it's a pleasure to shoot with the mild recoil.

I have hunted with cartridges from .303Br to .375 ouch n ouch and many in between, bottoming out on a 7mm 08 which I also bought for silhouette shooting. Nothing wrong with it at all but my personal preference is what I shoot today, the boring old 30-06. I will be buying a light weight rifle this year (Probably a Tikka I hate to admit) for hunting off my ebike and it will be in .308. Not much more recoil than the 7, and a bit more bullet. You can't go wrong with your choice OP.

Picked up a 70 ES a few weeks ago and am excited to get it sighted in now that it’s scoped and I grabbed 5 different boxes of ammo to try. I think don’t think you will regret picking up a 7 08 as it seems like a perfect cartridge for moose and deer out to 300 yards without excessive recoil.

Wonderful cartridge... Flat shooting, very reasonable recoil, intrinsically accurate, commercial ammo as well as all components affordably/readily available

Since you have a 30odd6 to lean on its hard to pick a better choice than the 7odd8 to compliment it.
