Trail Boss Replacement? Titegroup Subsonic Rifle Load

I played around with Trailboss years ago and developed a subsonic load for my .308 Savage (210 grain cast bullets with Trailboss). I even had a load for my SKS (180 grain cast bullets with Trailboss). My SKS would not cycle and it was essentially a straight pull rifle. They were both fun to shoot.

Now I have a Spectre Ballistics LPC with a 12.5" 300 Blackout barrel and use H110 powder which is very versatile and can be used with sub and supersonic loads. I have a 210 cast load at 1050 fps and a Barnes 110 grain TTSX load at 2260 fps.

Trailboss is super quiet in manual action rifles. Trailboss won't cycle a semi-auto

A powder like H110, W296 and the like will cycle a semi-auto but they will be much louder in a manual action.

Subsonics are quite different loads in SA and manual actions.

Thread on something similar here for 45-70.

The data for cast bullets link is on first page. With tightgroup and 405gr cast data starts at 8gr at ends at 12gr. Hodgson is 13gr with jacketed 410gr bullet. No start point, no other bullet listed.

I bought some cast and want to play with it, if they don't work well I will try Campro plated and see. If Hodgson shows a jacketed bullet plated should be fine.

I watched that when it showed up on my feed the other night.

When he commented the minimal amount of titegroup he was using didn't require any filler material I shook my head. I have always been told a case with little powder requires some filler.

Can someone school me why filler would not be required using 5 or 6 grains of powder in a case that can hold 50?

I believe it's because tightgroup isn't sensitive to position to ignite. I would trust that if Hodgson wanted a filler used they would have it with load data.

It's not the weight of powder but the volume the powder occupies inside the case.

Yes it's there. They have a subsonic section but you can just click rifle, the click 308 win, then choose the powder titegroup in the list and click that. It will show a few loads with different bullets.

thanks Ya, I found it right after I asked.

Guess I need to order some 175 Sub-X.

In my experience, these “mouse fart” loads will will not fully ignite because the primer isn’t strong enough to create a pressure environment to reach any powder up against the bullet. I would regularly find unburnt powder in my fired shells. So what to do? Stuffing some Dacron into the shell keeps the powder up against the primer works ( as you know). Another trick is to drill out the priming hole with 9/64 bit and using magnum primers and testing the loads (without Dacron) for consistency. Keep increasing the powder until you get what you feel is acceptable and, of course, safe. But there’s more: Because of the primer shortage, I started drilling out the primer pockets with a 1/4” bit and using 209 primers (also had to countersink and use a drop of crazy glue). 209 primers don’t seem to care that - in my case - 5 grains of Zip doesn’t have any filler. So now I have cases in 30/30, 30-06 and 338-06 modified to accept 209 primers for when I want to shoot quiet and with low recoil. Fun, eh.
